Opening Tip
• The Jaguars play host to the Mountaineers in their final home games of the regular season.
• The trio of Savannah Jones, Antoinette Lewis and Jayla Morrow will be recognized before Saturday's contest tips off as part of the program's Senior Day recognition.
• The Jags' most recent victory in their home finale came on March 4, 2017, when USA defeated Arkansas State 71-49.
• This is the earliest date on the calendar South will wrap up its home schedule since defeating Western Kentucky, 70-37, on Feb. 18, 2012.
• A victory in one of the two contests this weekend will secure a winning record in Sun Belt Conference play at the Mitchell Center for the Jags for the fourth year in a row.
Appalachian State Series Notes
• The programs have split the last four contests in the series, with each winning in Boone in the first meetings of the 2020-21 campaign last month.
• Five of the Jaguars' seven wins in the series have come in Mobile.
• USA has claimed five of seven match-ups between the two schools at the Mitchell Center.
• Three of the last four games in the series have been decided by a double-digit margin.
• The losing team has scored 55 points or fewer in four of the last five contests in Mobile.
Making Up For Lost Time
After missing nine games due to injury, Jones returned to action in the first meeting between the Jaguars and Mountaineers last month and proceeded to reach double figures in the scoring column twice in her first six games back. In South's four contests thus far in February, the redshirt senior is averaging 16.8 points having scored 20-plus in three of four outings after recording a game-high 21 points — the 20th occasion in her career she has paced all players in the category — last time out against Troy. She added 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the year, the same number of times she posted 10 or more points and rebounds in the same contest in 102 appearances her first four seasons at USA.
Mallard Provides Post Presence
Jaylen Mallard contributed a career-best 13 rebounds as well as 11 points in the match-up with the Trojans to post her first double-double at the collegiate level. It marked the first occasion the sophomore forward has paced South on the boards since the Jaguars defeated Georgia Southern in their league debut this winter, while it was the first time she has reached double figures on the glass since a season-opening victory over Mobile. With the effort, Mallard and Jones became the first pair of Jags with a double-double in the same contest since Jones and Lewis accomplished the feat in a win over Arkansas State in the opening round of the SBC Tournament on March 10 a year ago.
Lowe Hits From Long Distance
Redshirt junior Devyn Lowe was the only other Jaguar in double figures scoring against the Trojans as she posted 16 of the team's 22 points off the bench on Saturday. It was the most she has scored since recording a career-high 24 points on Jan. 16 at App State while it marked the eighth occasion this season that Lowe has connected on three or more three-point field goals in a contest.
Additional Notes From The Troy Game
• The Jags were credited with a season-best blocked shot total, with Lewis and Jadona Davis contributing three apiece.
• With the effort, the former increased her career total to 213 to take over sole possession of second place on South's all-time list in the category while the latter equaled a career high first set against Georgia State on Jan. 28.
• USA's free-throw percentage was its best of the year thus far.
• It was the 10th time this season that Mahogany Vaught has led South in assists.
• Jayla Morrow was with family in Birmingham and unavailable for the Jaguars in both games against the Trojans last week.
Notes From The Last Appalachian State Meeting
• App State held South to its lowest point total of the year at the time.
• The Jaguars' three-point field-goal percentage was best they had recorded at that point in the season.
• Lowe's scoring total was not only a career high but the most by a Jag this season.
• It was the 40th time in her career that Lewis led all players in rebounding.
• Jones played in both games in Boone, making her first appearances since USA's season-opening victory over Mobile after missing the previous nine contests due to injury.
