Opening Tip
• South plays Troy twice in three days, with the first match-up on Thursday concluding a three-game swing away from the Mitchell Center.
• This will be just the second in-state road contest for the Jaguars this season; USA fell 74-66 at Auburn on Dec. 13.
• The Jags' last in-state win away from home was a 72-67 victory at Alabama on Dec. 5, 2018.
• USA has a 39-76 (33.9 percent) all-time record on the road against other state schools.
• A win in this contest would give the Jaguars eight victories at Troy and tie for the most the program has record on another in-state institution's home court; USA has claimed eight of 10 match-ups at Spring Hill.
Troy Series Notes
• Last year marked the first time since the 2016-17 campaign that either team swept both games in the regular season.
• The Trojans recorded the most recent streak of better than back-to-back wins with three straight victories from March 9, 2016-Feb. 4, 2017.
• Troy has won the last four meetings in the series at Trojan Arena, with South's last victory in the facility a 75-71 decision on Jan. 26, 2016.
• Three of the last four regular-season match-ups between the two programs have been decided by eight points or less.
• The winning team has recorded at least 70 points in nine of the last 10 meetings in the series, surpassing 80 points on five of those occasions.
Lewis Candidate For Another Honor
On Monday Antoinette Lewis was named a candidate for the 2020-21 Senior CLASS Award®, making her one of 30 individuals eligible to claim the honor that goes to the student-athlete who excels both on and off the court in the areas of community, classroom, character and competition. Lewis averaged 9.5 rebounds per contest in the Jaguars' two victories at Coastal Carolina last weekend — moving into the top 10 on the Sun Belt's all-time list in the process — while leading the Jags in the category in 10 straight outings until the contest on Sunday. On the year, she tops the Sun Belt with 2.28 blocks per game and is third in rebounding with nine per contest, ranking 32nd in the country in the former category, while averaging 11 points to go along with 32 assists and 26 steals.
Jones Key In Both Wins At Coastal Carolina
Savannah Jones led the Jaguars after averaging 22.5 points per game, shooting better than 50 percent from the field including making nearly 60 percent from three-point range, in South's victories over the Chanticleers. The redshirt senior made a season-best six treys — matching the most by a Jag this year — in scoring a game-high 22 points on Saturday, keying USA's school-record 19 threes in the contest. She returned on Sunday to post her first double-double of the campaign with a season-best 23 points and 10 rebounds, with 13 of those points coming in the final quarter highlighted by back-to-back three-pointers in a 37-second stretch that gave the Jaguars the lead for good. Jones recorded a career high with four steals and added a season-best two blocks in the second game as well while posting 20-plus points in back-to-back outings for the first time Dec. 20 and Jan. 2 last season.
Additional Notes From The Coastal Carolina Games
• Not only did the Jaguars break the previous school record of 16 three-pointers, set in a win at Troy on Jan. 7, 2006, their total from beyond the arc in the opening game of the weekend tied the second-highest mark in the nation this year.
• One day after scoring a season-high 32 first-quarter points, the Jags recorded their lowest figure in the opening period this year in the second contest.
• Jones became the eighth individual in program history to score 1,400 points in a career with her performance in Saturday's game.
• Mahogany Vaught posted her team-leading 12th outing with 10 or more points in USA's second victory, while it marked the third occasion this season that she has been credited with five-plus assists and steals in the same game.
• In matching Vaught for game-high honors on Saturday Jayla Morrow recorded a season-best assist total.
Notes From The Last Troy Meeting
• The Trojans' free-throw attempt total was the highest posted by a Jaguar opponent during the 2019-20 season.
• It was the fourth occasion in a five-game span that USA connected on 10-plus three-pointers.
• Troy's three-point field goal total matched the lowest surrendered by South last year (Coastal Carolina had made a pair two weeks prior to the contest).
• Lewis recorded the 1,200th point of her career on the way to reaching double-figures in the category for the 20th time on the season.
• It marked the first time last year that Jones was held below 10 points in back-to-back outings.
