MOBILE, Ala. – University of South Alabama head men's golf coach Ben Hannan announced Friday that Hugo Thyr has signed a National Letter-of-Intent and will join the program in the fall of 2022.
Thyr comes to the Jaguars with four seasons of eligibility at the collegiate level after posting nine top-20 results in amateur competitions over the last two years. The top-ranked Swedish amateur in his age group for three years, he has represented the country at international competitions since turning 15 years old.
A native of Lidköping, Thyr advanced to the round of 16 at the JSM Match Play before finishing in 10th and 16th place, respectively, in his final two appearances on the Swedish Junior Tour. He recorded a 213 54-hole score at the first event after opening play with rounds of 69 and 70, while at the latter tournament Thyr shot a 71 on the opening day and closed with a 72 en route to a 216 total.
Earlier in the summer, he posted a four-round score of 282 at the Guldpokalen professional event highlighted by two rounds of 69 and another of 70, to end up in a tie for fifth place. Thyr also carded a 72 in his second round at the TanumStrand Fjällbacka Open — a professional tournament that is part of the Nordic Golf League — while he began the season with back-to-back top-20 finishes on the Toro Tour after shooting 72 or lower in three of five rounds at the two competitions.
Thyr had a 71 in the second round in his first appearance of the 2020 season at the African Amateur Stroke Play Championship, following up with a top-10 result at the Dustin Johnson World Junior Championship contested at TPC Myrtle Beach. He fired a 66 in the second of three rounds at the Stockholms Golfklubb Amateur Open, matching that score while also adding a 67 on the opening day of play on the way to placing third at a JSM Tour event over the summer; and Thyr also finished sixth at a later tournament on the tour with a 217 total after shooting a 70 and 72 over the final 36 holes. He has claimed two gold and a pair of silver medals as well in Swedish high school competi-tion for Filbornaskolan, the same institution that produced current Jaguar freshman Kevin Dahlberg.
"Hugo played in the 2019 German Boys Amateur Championship, the same tournament where I saw Kevin Dahlberg who is a freshman on our team now," Hannan said. "Unfortunately, with Covid-related lockdowns and the lack of travel — particularly internationally — we weren't able to see him again so we focused on his tournament results and talked to some of our contacts to learn more about him. His ability and playing résumé speaks for itself, and as I got to know him better through the recruiting process I knew he would be a really good fit with our team and the direction we are headed.
"Hugo is a powerful player who is an excellent ball striker and has a physical game to excel at the collegiate level. We are excited for him to join us next fall."
After shooting par or better as a team five times this fall, the Jaguars return to action when they play host to the annual Mobile Bay Intercollegiate at the Magnolia Grove Crossings Golf Course Feb. 14-15.
