Opening Tip
• The Jaguars play the last of four straight games at home with match-ups against Coastal Carolina Friday and Saturday afternoon.
• This marks the first time that South will play four straight Sun Belt Conference contests at the Mitchell Center since hosting five league games in a row from Jan. 24-Feb. 5, 2000.
• It's also the first time since the conference began sponsoring a women's basketball regular season schedule in 1984-85 that the Jags will play their first four Sun Belt contests at home.
• USA split two match-ups with Georgia Southern last weekend, one of four pairings in the league that saw both teams claim a victory (the other two were postponed due to COVID-19 protocols).
• The last time the Jaguars won back-to-back SBC games at home came on Feb. 14-16, 2019.
Coastal Carolina Series Notes
• All but the first meeting between the two programs have come in Sun Belt Conference play.
• The Chanticleers swept the regular-season series during the 2019-20 campaign after the Jaguars had turned the same trick the previous year.
• Both of last winter's match-ups were decided by single digits after the previous three meetings featured a margin of 10-plus points.
• In the Jaguars' most recent victory in the series — a 67-50 decision on March 7, 2019 — Devyn Lowe recorded 20 points on a career-high 6-of-7 shooting from three-point range.
• The winning team has scored 70 or more points in four of the last five contests.
Back On Track
Senior Antoinette Lewis led all players with 18 points in Saturday's contest against Georgia Southern, her first time reaching double figures in the scoring column since the Jags visited Auburn on Dec. 13; with 24 points in the two games, she moved past Annie Witherington (1980-81) into eighth place on the school's all-time scoring list. Lewis also paced South in rebounding and blocks in the second outing — her four in the latter category were a season-high total — one day after posting a season-best four steals.
Vaught Keeps Streak Going
Mahogany Vaught continued her streak of scoring 10 or more points in each of her seven appearances this winter with 13 and 15 points in the two match-ups with the Eagles, as she has now scored more points in 2020-21 (97) than her first two seasons in the program combined (72). The junior has also led the Jaguars in assists in each of the last three outings after handing out a game-high-tying four on Saturday, and has now accomplished the feat on four occasions this year after turning the trick three times the previous two seasons.
Three-Point Threat
In each of the last four games — a stretch during which she has scored 10 or more points on each occasion — Lowe has connected on multiple three-point field goals, as she is shooting 41.2 percent (14-of-34) from long distance in that span. The guard finished with a career-high-tying 22 points in Friday's win over the Eagles, and in addition was credited with multiple assists in both contests as well as a pair of steals in the second game last weekend.
Additional Notes From The Ga. Southern Games
• South's win in the Friday match-up with the Eagles was its first when trailing at the break since rallying to defeat UTA in the second round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament last year.
• GS shot an opponent-low 13 percent (3-of-23) from behind the three-point line in the first of the two contests last weekend.
• Jayla Morrow has now hit 11 three-pointers on the season, the same total she recorded in 24 appearances a year ago, while sinking more than one shot from beyond the arc in three of the last four contests.
• When Jaylen Mallard paced the Jags with eight rebounds in the win on Friday, it marked the first time she has led the team on the boards since a defeat of Louisiana on Feb. 6 last season.
• Casey Ferguson scored all of her season-high seven points in the first half in Saturday's contest.
Notes From The Last Coastal Carolina Meeting
• It was both the highest three-point field goal total recorded and fewest allowed by the Jaguars during the 2019-20 season.
• South posted 10 or more steals for the first of two times in Sun Belt action last year.
• Shaforia Kines tied a school game record for three-point field goals while posting 15 of her game-high 30 points in the final quarter.
• It was the most points scored by a Jag against an NCAA Division I opponent last season as well as the highest total of her career.
• DJ Williams became the first opponent to record a triple-double against the Jaguars since March 12, 1992.
