Opening Tip
• South returns to the Mitchell Center for the first time since Jan. 9 to face Georgia State.
• These will be the Jaguars' only two home contests in a 34-day stretch.
• A victory in one of the two match-ups with the Panthers will give the Jags a winning record in January for the fourth season in a row.
• This will be the first of two Sun Belt Conference contests on Thursday for USA this year.
• The Panthers are one of two teams that head coach Terry Fowler has a double-digit victory total against with the Jags defeating GSU 10 times in his seven-plus seasons at South Alabama.
Georgia State Series Notes
• The Jaguars' current six-game winning streak is the longest put together by either team in the series.
• South has won the last two match-ups between the two teams at the Mitchell Center, including a 62-59 decision in the most recent visit by the Panthers on Feb. 16, 2019.
• GSU's last win in Mobile — and in the series — was 55-45 victory on Jan. 26, 2017.
• Three of the last four meetings between the two schools have been decided by a single-digit margin.
• The losing team has failed to score 60 points in nine of the last 11 contests.
Another Milestone For Lewis
Antoinette Lewis blocked three shots in both of the Jaguars' contests at Georgia Southern last weekend, making the forward/center the third individual in program history to surpass 200 in a career. Not only did the senior move into the top 10 on the Sun Belt's all-time list in the category, she also climbed into 15th place in the league's record books in rebounding after posting 19 in the two games against the Eagles. Lewis didn't just pace both teams in both blocks and rebounds on Saturday, she also topped all individuals with a season-best five steals and three assists, making it the first time in her career she has accomplished the feat in the latter category.
Vaught Leads Way In Win In Statesboro
Junior guard Mahogany Vaught led all players with 16 points in the Jaguars' victory at Georgia Southern on Friday, the first time she scored in double figures since posting a career-best 20 points in a Jan. 8 victory over Coastal Carolina as well as the 10th occasion in her career she has accomplished the feat. Vaught also was credited with a pair of steals in Saturday's match-up with the Eagles — the eighth game this year in which she has finished with more than one — as she shares the league lead with 32 on the season and is second in the Sun Belt in thefts per game.
Boost From The Bench
When Savannah Jones came off the bench to supply a game-high 17 points against the Eagles on Saturday, it marked the 70th occasion that the redshirt senior guard has recorded a double-digit scoring total dating back to the start of the 2016-17 season. She also matched Lewis with a game-best 10 rebounds in the first contest at GS, giving her a double-figure rebounding total in two of her first four appearances this season; that's the same number of times she had accomplished the feat in her career entering the year.
Additional Notes From The Georgia Southern Games
• Saturday's match-up was the first time the Jags have forced the opposition into 25 or more turnovers since William Carey had 25 on Dec. 17, 2019.
• In fact, it was the most turnovers South has caused dating back to March 8, 2014, when UTA finished with 27 in a 60-57 overtime victory for the Jaguars, and the highest total recorded by an opponent in regulation since Western Kentucky posted 28 in USA's 70-37 win at the Mitchell Center on Feb. 18, 2012.
• South equaled a season high — first set at Auburn last month — with 15 steals in the game on Saturday as well.
• Jayla Morrow has now recorded at least one steal in each of the last 10 outings, including finishing with two-plus seven times during that span.
• Jadona Davis had scored nine points in the previous five games combined before posting seven — along with four boards — in the Jags' victory on Friday.
Notes From The Last Georgia State Meeting
• Fowler earned his 300th career victory as a head coach with the Jaguar win.
• South's point total was the highest it recorded on the road in Sun Belt regular-season action in 2019-20.
• It was the first time last season that the Jaguars shot better than 50 percent from the floor against an NCAA Division I opponent as well as the highest figure USA would record in SBC play.
• Vaught posted her first career game scoring in double figures.
• Morrow's point total was a season high at the time while it would be the most assists she would record last year.
