OPELIKA, Ala. – Led by rising sophomore Jacob LeCroy, a trio of University of South Alabama men's golfers made the cut to advance to the final two rounds of the 104th Alabama Men's State Amateur Championship contested at the Saugahatchee Country Club.
LeCroy broke the previous event record after finishing with a four-day 19-under-par 269 score, with Jordan Plunkett tying for 12th with a total of 284 and Dawson Atkinson ending up in a tie for 43rd place as well.
After shooting 3 under through the first two rounds of the tournament on Wednesday and Thursday to make the cut, LeCroy followed up with a 9-under-par 63 in the third round before closing play with a 65 Saturday. Â The Anniston native birdied each of his first five holes on Friday, posting a 6-under-par 30 on the front side of the course before adding three more birdies on the back nine. Â LeCroy added five more birdies before the turn on the final day of play as well, finishing the event with 25 overall highlighted by 17 on the weekend.
Plunkett — who hails from Sterrett — broke par in three of four rounds last week including opening with a 3-under-par 69 as he responded to a bogey on No. 3 with four birdies over his final 14 holes.  He added three birdies and an eagle on the par-five 15th for a 70 in the second round, and on the final day carded four more birdies while posting a 71.
Atkinson began the event with a 72 that featured two birdies and an eagle on No. 15, as he would go on to make the cut after shooting a 2-under-par 70 Thursday highlighted by a bogey-free 32 on the back nine. Â The Trussville resident also carded a pair of birdies over the last 18 holes, finishing with a 293 four-day total.
Gordon Sargent of Birmingham broke the tournament scoring record as well with a 24-under-par 264 total to win the event.
