Opening Tip
• The Jags look to rebound from their first loss of the season against Nicholls on Saturday night.
• It's the second straight game against an NCAA Division I opponent for South after opening the year against Mobile on Nov. 25.
• This marks the fifth straight season that the Jaguars will face a program from the Southland Conference.
• USA has won all six contests against league opponents during that stretch; the Colonels are the last Southland team to defeat the Jags with their win in Thibodaux in the most recent match-up in the series.
• The Jaguars have 71 all-time wins over current members of the Southland, more than any league outside of Sun Belt action with the exception of Conference USA (87).
Nicholls Series Notes
• Although the Jaguars own the series lead, the Colonels have won the last two match-ups.
• South last defeated Nicholls, 63-50, on Dec. 5, 2009, in Thibodaux.
• USA's most recent victory over the Colonels at home — an 83-30 decision — came on Nov. 14 the previous year.
• The Jags have claimed all three meetings in the series played at the Mitchell Center.
• The Jaguars' last nine wins in the series have been decided by a double-digit margin.
Lowe Lights It Up
Guard Devyn Lowe led all scorers with 22 points last time out against Tulane, which included sinking six three-point field goals (in 12 attempts); both figures were the best of her career. It was the first time she has scored in double figures since recording 12 points at Southern Mississippi on Dec. 15 a year ago, her first 20-point effort since a March 7, 2019, victory over Coastal Carolina and the fifth occasion that she has posted 10-plus points in her career. In addition to being the first time the redshirt junior has paced all players in scoring since the start of the 2018-19 season, Lowe also led everyone in assists – she was credited with four — for the first occasion since recording a career-best 12 against Mobile on Nov. 26 last year.
Getting It Done On The Glass
Antoinette Lewis had a game- and season-high 12 rebounds against the Green Wave, with the effort helping the senior forward climb three places on the school's all-time list in the category; with 882 in her career, she was able to pass the trio of Tamara Carter (1995-98), Dina Jones (1992-95) and Annette Williams (1983-86). Lewis added 13 points for her second double-double of the season — and fifth in the Jags' last six outings dating back to a win at Arkansas State on March 5 last winter — while she has also paced South in blocks in both contests this year after recording a season-best three against Tulane.
Dynamite (Delayed) Debut
Junior Mahogany Vaught returned after missing South's season-opening win over Mobile to record career highs in both scoring (17) and steals (four) on Tuesday, and she was credited with four rebounds and a pair of steals as well. That was one more point than the guard had posted in her last 12 appearances of the 2019-20 campaign — a stretch that began on Feb. 1 at Troy — while it marked just the second time in 48 games that she has recorded 10 or more points in a contest.
Additional Notes From The Tulane Game
• The Jaguars were credited with 10 steals in the contest, marking the first time they have recorded a double-digit theft total in back-to-back outings since the first two contests of the 2017-18 campaign.
• It was the fifth straight outing dating back to last season that South has finished with a higher field-goal percentage than the opposition.
• Tulane's 27 points off turnovers were the most posted by a USA opponent since Feb. 28, 2019, when UTA finished with 31 in a 72-51 defeat of the Jaguars in Arlington.
• It was the first time since falling 71-62 to Coastal Carolina at home on Jan. 4 last season that South has lost when making more field goals than the other team.
• The Jags were playing without Savannah Jones — who was injured in practice on Sunday prior to the contest — and Jala Buster, who was dismissed from the team for failing to meet program standards.
Notes From The Last Nicholls Meeting
• The Colonels put together a 9-2 run in the final 90 seconds to pull out the victory.
• It was the most points that Colby Davis — then a sophomore, currently in her second season as a graduate assistant for the Jaguars — posted during the 2014-15 campaign.
• Freshman Tia Charles led Nicholls after recording a career-high scoring total, which paced all players in the category.
• The Colonels played without their leading scorer, Emani White.
• It would be the first of 13 straight losses for the Jaguars, who ended the year with a 5-24 overall mark.
