Opening Tip
• South plays host to its first NCAA Division I opponent of the year when the Green Wave visits the Mitchell Center.
• It's the second straight year that the two programs are meeting after the Jags earned a victory in New Orleans last December.
• The Jaguars are in the middle of a four-game homestand to begin the season, their longest since playing the first five contests of the 2014-15 campaign at the Mitchell Center.
• With a win in this game, the Jags would begin the year 2-0 for the second time in the last three seasons.
• This marks the first time since USA took on Central Florida on Nov. 24, 2015, that Jaguars are facing a member of the American Athletic Conference on their home court.
Tulane Series Notes
• It's the first time the Jaguars will play host to Tulane since falling to the Wave 73-71 on Dec. 1, 2009.
• The Green Wave has claimed both contests in the series played in the Mitchell Center.
• The Jags last beat Tulane at home on Jan. 13, 1989, earning a 91-69 decision.
• South's victory in New Orleans last year snapped Tulane's five-game win streak in the series, which dated back to that victory during the 1988-89 season.
• USA has averaged 79.7 points in wins compared to just 57.6 in losses in the series.
Jaguars Led By Lewis In Season Debut
In the Jaguars' opening game of the season, Antoinette Lewis needed just 22 minutes to post a double-double and help lead South to a 30-point victory over Mobile last Wednesday. Lewis paced the Jags in scoring (13), assists (four) and blocks (two) while recording 10 rebounds and missing only one attempt from the floor. It was her third consecutive double-double dating back to the opening two rounds of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament last March.
Busy On The Boards
Sophomore Jaylen Mallard pulled down a career-best 12 rebounds in the Jaguars' season opener, adding eight points and a pair of assists — also a career-high total — in only 19 minutes of action. The forward posted four points and 11 rebounds combined in her final four appearances a year ago, while it marked her second time recording a double-digit board total after first accomplishing the feat in a Feb. 6 defeat of Louisiana last winter.
Jones Gets It Done On The Glass
It was actually Savannah Jones who led all players in rebounding in the Mobile contest after she was credited with a career-best 13. The redshirt senior has now reached double figures in the category twice in the Jags' last three outings; she had 10 in an opening-round Sun Belt Tournament victory over Arkansas State on March 10, which was also the last time South had three individuals grab 10 or more rebounds in a game after not turning the trick since March 2012 prior to the start of postseason action last winter.
Additional Notes From The Mobile Game
• It was the first time the Jaguars have won a game with only one individual scoring 10 or more points since defeating Southern on the road 53-49 on Nov. 19, 2018.
• The last occasion South allowed the opposition to make just one three-point field goal prior to defeating the Rams came on March 16, 2019, in the championship game of the SBC Tournament against Little Rock.
• It was the most minutes Jayla Morrow has played since she was on the floor for 30 in a win over UTA on March 15, 2019, in the semifinals of the Sun Belt Tournament.
• Devyn Lowe came into play having recorded six points and two rebounds in her final four appearances last season, while Casey Ferguson saw game action for the first time since the Jaguars defeated Arkansas State on Feb. 20 a year ago.
• Four Jags — Jadona Davis, Ashanti Lavergne, Serin Dunne and Janelle Jones — made their program debuts in the contest.
Notes From Last Year's Tulane Game
• The 22 points the Green Wave scored in the second half were the fewest allowed by the Jags after the break last season until ULM posted 17 on Feb. 8.
• South turned the ball over a season-low nine times.
• It was the first time last season that USA won when the opponent connected on more three-point field goals.
• Shaforia Kines scored eight of her game-high
23 points over the final five minutes.
• The performance featured one of six double-doubles turned in by Lewis prior to the start of Sun Belt play.
