Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

SOCCER FALLS IN DOUBLE-OVERTIME TO GEORGIA STATE

MOBILE, Ala. – With 3:34 on the clock in the game's final period, the Panthers' Jimena Cabrero dribble down the attacking-right side of the field and looped a long shot that went over the Jaguar defense and bounced in off the far post causing the University of South Alabama soccer team to fall to Georgia State, 1-0 in double-overtime at the Cage Sunday afternoon.

With the exception of shots, the game was tight as the possession was almost equal between teams. The Jaguars had an advantage on shots (13-5) and shots-on-goal (6-3) but committed more fouls (14-12).

Georgia State picked up four points on the league table with today's win and a draw with Troy on Friday.

GAME FACTS
- With the teams deadlocked early on, the first pair of shots came in after the 13-minute mark. Cabrero tested Jaguar Goalkeeper Anita Gudmundsdottir, but the freshman was up to the challenge. After a handball violation by the Panthers' net-minder Jaddah Foos, Junior Brenna McPartlan knocked the ball toward a post, but was denied by a diving Foos.
- The stalemate continued through the end of the first half as both teams showed impressive formation discipline with both sides attacking in a 4-3-3 formation, but forming a 4-1-4-1 in defense with two banks of four.
- In the second half, South had control of the run of play early with freshman Kailey Littleford and graduate-student Athanasia Moraitou placing shots on goal 38 seconds apart in the 52nd minute.
- The teams continued trading possession and shots for the remainder of the second half but with neither team creating a chance to take control of the match.
- McPartlan belted a shot from around 30 yards away in the first overtime; the long shot was initially thought to be much too high by the defenders who eased up, but a dip at the end caught everyone flat footed as the ball nudged the crossbar on its way out of bounds.
-The junior out of Lancashire, England made another chance at the end of the first overtime, but this shot was saved by Foos as the teams switched end for the final time.
- After the Panthers took possession about halfway through the second overtime, concise passing and ball control coupled with tired players gave Cabrero an opportunity on the attacking-right side of the pitch. The shot, which initially looked like a cross, got over the defenders' heads and curled into the far post, bouncing in for the golden goal.

NOTES
- The loss snapped a 10-game win streak in the series with Georgia State.
- Three of the four games played in Alabama by the Jaguars this season have went into double-overtime, but none have ended in a draw.
- Today marks the first game that South has been shutout. The last time the Jaguars made it to their sixth game without being shut out was 2015.
- The shut-out streak USA's defense had was ended at the 299-minute mark.

Head Coach Richard Moodie
- On the result: "We are obviously disappointed, but we were not firing on all cylinders. We will step back, look at it and figure it out. Give credit where credit is due, Georgia State did a fantastic job, they went into double-overtime Friday night, and again here and they hung around with us. We did not have the final punch in the final third. I thought we had a few chances to win it, but could not put it in. It just takes one moment of brilliance to win the game and today Georgia State had it, and we will keep telling our student-athletes that's what it takes."
