WILKES SCORES BUT SOCCER FALLS TO COASTAL CAROLINA

MOBILE, Ala. – A goal from junior Tilly Wilkes not enough as the University of South Alabama soccer team fell to Coastal Carolina, 2-1, Friday night at The Cage.

With what seemed like a chess match with possession between head coaches Richard Moodie and Paul Hogan, early indication was both teams wanted to control possession when possible and attack from the back.

The Jaguars struck first in the match in the fourth minute with freshman Izzy Ford earning an assist early in the match to Wilkes on the goal.

Coastal Carolina got on the board after Loranna Austin hit what appeared to be a curling cross that kept bending and found the inside of the goal's right side netting. Sunneva Sigurvinsdottir scored what would be the game-winning goal after dribbling away from a defender and unleashing a shot that found the right upper 90 with under 8 minutes remaining in regulation.

Game Facts
- After both teams seemed more intent on strategical striking from the back, Wilkes tackled the ball away from CCU's right winger Austin and passed the ball to Ford as she sealed the defender behind her. The Sheffield, England, native connected with the left back from Preston as she sprinted past the defense and deftly beat the keeper with a placed side-footed shot past Chanticleer goalkeeper Ky Hudson.
- The initial break-through caused both defenses to tight up while keeping both offenses in-check. The clubs combined for 14 first-half shots but defenses combined to block four, and cause the other nine to be contested and from difficult angles to score from.
- CCU earned a free kick at the 34th minute on the edge of South's goal box resulting in the Chants' best chance of the first half, but the ensuing kick resulted in a shot blocked by the defense and an attempt knocked off target.
- The Jags came out looking for another goal early in the second half with graduate student Athanasia Moraitou forcing a save from Hudson and Morgan Cross knocking a shot a minute later but it was blocked by a defender.
- Seventeen minutes into the second half, Austin struck for Coastal. Working down the attacking right side, the Chant shifted into the goal box and sent a curling shot across the face of the goal that bent inside the far goal post, knotting the game at 1.
- Coastal seized momentum in the match and forced two more shots at South's defense, the first was blocked, and freshman goalkeeper Anita Gudmundsdottir made her only save of the second half on the other.
- With just under eight minutes left in the match, Sigurvinsdottir dribbled free of her defender, and from about 25 yards away near the center of the pitch belted in the go-ahead goal with 7 minutes 46 seconds on the clock.
- South responded with some pressure and earned a corner kick. On the cross that was sent in, junior Brenna McPartlan's headed effort was knocked out of bounds for another corner. The second lobbed pass pinged around the box, eventually going airborne to the attacking-right half of the box and before a Jaguar could shot, the Chants cleared the ball away.
- McPartlan would put two more attempts on goal, but Hudson saved both tries as CCU held on for the win.

Notes
- In the series with Coastal Carolina, each team has picked up two wins in the last four meetings.
- Ford made her first start for the Jags, picking up an assist three and a half minutes into the match.
- The freshman from Sheffield has points in the last two match with the game-winning goal at Troy last Sunday.
- Wilkes picked up her second goal of the year, both were in conference play.
- This is the first time Wilkes has scored using her feet in her career, as the two previous were from headers.
- Ovenberger now has appearances in the last four matches after not playing in the first four.

THEY SAID IT
Head Coach Richard Moodie

- On the results: "They [Coastal Carolina] were the better team, they came here and played better by out possessing and outshooting us. It pains me to say it, but the better team won today. [Izzy] Ford played well tonight and got an assist with points in two appearances for us. It is on us now to try and figure out what went wrong and to fix it for Sunday against Appalachian State."
