Opening Tip
• The Jaguars play their first Sun Belt Conference road game of 2020 when they visit the Ragin' Cajuns Thursday night.
• USA's last win away from home came in Louisiana when the Jags defeated Tulane 62-53 in New Orleans on Dec. 7.
• South's most recent road victory in league action was a 69-53 defeat of Georgia Southern in Statesboro on Jan. 19 last season.
• The Jaguars and Louisiana alternated wins in the previous seven match-ups in the series before USA swept both contests during the 2018-19 campaign.
• The Jags claimed the last meeting in Lafayette between the two schools with a 72-57 victory on Jan. 25, 2018.
Twenty-Twenty Vision
Senior Shaforia Kines led the Jaguars with 21 points to go along with five rebounds last time out against Coastal Carolina, marking the first time that the guard has scored 20 or more in back-to-back outings — she had 24 points in the Jags' win over Appalachian State the previous Thursday — since accomplishing the feat in wins over Texas State and Troy on March 13 and 14 last year at the Sun Belt Tournament. With the effort, the 50th of her career in double figures, Kines moved past Lyletha Gamble (1999-02) to climb into the top 20 on the program's all-time points list.
Lewis Leads The Way
Antoinette Lewis reached double digits in both scoring and rebounding for the first time since posting a double-double in South's victory over William Carey on Dec. 17 after finishing with 13 points and 11 boards against the Chanticleers. In addition to recording her Sun Belt-best seventh double-double of the year, the junior center paced the Jaguars with a season-high five steals and four blocks as well, moving into the top five in the school's career record book in the latter category with the performance. It was the 10th occasion this year that Lewis has pulled down 10 or more boards as well as the 30th time since the start of the 2017-18 campaign that she has led all players on the glass.
Savvy Scorer
G Savannah Jones is tied with Kines for the team lead with 11 games in double figures after recording 12 points in the match-up with the Chants, as she has now scored 10 or more in 10 of the Jaguars' last 11 games. The redshirt junior added five rebounds as well, marking the fourth time in the last five outings she has reached that figure, although she saw her streak of making at least one three-pointer in 25 straight contests — which began in a Jan. 26 win over ULM a year ago — come to an end.
Nice Start In The New Year
Kennedi Centers posted a season-high 11 points to go along with six rebounds in the Coastal Carolina contest, giving her totals of 17 and 12, respectively, in South's first two Sun Belt games this season. It was the first occasion the senior forward has reached double digits in the scoring column since posting 12 at Wyoming in the second round of the WNIT on March 24 last year, while she fell one board shy of matching her best total of the campaign recorded at Southern Mississippi on Dec. 15.
Additional Notes From The Coastal Carolina Game
• Until Kines' three-pointer with 1:18 left in the contest, the Jags were in danger of not hitting a shot from beyond the arc for the first time since Feb. 3, 2000.
• The Jaguars have dropped all five games this season when their opponent has shot 40 percent or better from the field.
• South has now outrebounded the opposition in three of the last four contests.
• The Jags have also finished with fewer turnovers than their opponent in five of their last six outings.
• USA had a 42-26 advantage scoring in the paint.
