Opening Tip
• The Jags begin February play with the first of four road contests in a five-game stretch over the next two weeks.
• It's the first of two meetings this month between the two programs, with the match-up in Mobile set for Feb. 29 at the Mitchell Center.
• The teams have met three times in three of the last four seasons — including each of the last two — after facing each other at the Sun Belt Conference Tournament as well.
• Both squads have won at home to split the regular-season series the last two years.
• The Trojans own the last victory by a road team in the series after defeating the Jaguars 73-57 in Mobile on Dec. 31, 2016.
Road To Recovery
The Jaguars' rallied from a 23-point deficit — they were down 60-37 with eight minutes and 21 seconds to go in the fourth period — to record the biggest comeback under the direction of current head coach Terry Fowler after defeating Texas State 78-76 in double overtime last Saturday. It was the first time USA has recovered from a double-digit halftime deficit since Nov. 12, 2011, when they were down 36-25 at the break but rebounded to pull out an 89-76 triple overtime win over Central Florida.
Working Overtime
The Jags improved to 2-0 in extra time this season with the come-from-behind victory over the Bobcats, their first overtime win in conference play since defeating Georgia Southern in Statesboro on March 1, 2018. South has now won its last four overtime contests dating back to the start of the 2018-19 campaign.
Big Shots
That's what Savannah Jones provided in last weekend's win, scoring seven points in the final 14 seconds of regulation to force overtime — she connected on a pair of threes, completing a four-point play after a foul on the first — as well as sinking the game-winning basket with 18 seconds to go in the contest. The redshirt junior finished with a game-best 24 points and season-high-tying nine rebounds to mark the 25th occasion in her career she has paced the team in scoring — the most on the roster — as well as the first contest she has led all players in the category since South's last visit to Troy on Feb. 23 a year ago. The guard also tied a season high in threes after going 6-of-15 from beyond the arc, equaling the most by a Jaguar this season (Shaforia Kines also had six against Alabama on Nov. 21) as she moved past Denise Adams (1984-87) into 16th place on the school's all-time scoring list.
Triple Double-Double
C Antoinette Lewis ended up with 14 points and 10 boards in the win over the Bobcats to post her team-leading 10th double-double of the season — that figure leads the Sun Belt and stands among the top 20 nationally — while scoring the 1,100th point of her career. It marked the first time since joining the program that the junior has put together a double-double in three straight outings, making her the first Jag to accomplish the feat since Ra'Shawna Sippio turned the trick in six consecutive contests from Jan. 14-31, 2009. Over the last four games, 28 of Lewis' 38 rebounds (73.7 percent) have come on the offensive end of the floor.
Sophomores Shine
Jala Buster recorded 11 points last time out while Damaya Telemaque added 10 to go along with a season-high nine rebounds, as the two sophomores have scored 10-plus points in both of South's overtime contests this season. It was the first game that Buster — who tied a career high with two three-point field goals — has scored in double digits since posting 12 in the Jags' Jan. 2 win over Appalachian State, while Telemaque finished in double figures for the first time since the Jaguars defeated ULM on Jan. 11.
Additional Notes From The UTA Game
• Kennedi Centers scored 10-plus points in a game for the second time this year as well (she recorded 11 against Coastal Carolina on Jan. 4).
• It was the first occasion that USA has had five individuals with 10 or more points in a game since defeating Mobile on Nov. 26.
• Telemaque was the only Jaguar with multiple thefts, posting two, marking the fifth time this season and 10th in her career that she has led the team in the category.
• The Jags have made 10 or more three-pointers seven times during the 2019-20 campaign, winning five of those outings.
• South's 32 points in the final period were the most the team has scored in a quarter this season.
