Opening Tip
• The Jaguars look to avoid their first three-game losing streak of the year.
• This will be the first of two meetings with the Warhawks during the regular season with the Jags scheduled to visit ULM on Saturday, Feb. 8.
• South claimed the only meeting between the two schools last season, extending its win streak against the Warhawks to five to match its longest since the series began in 1992; the Jaguars also picked up five straight victories over ULM from Dec. 9, 1995-Dec. 30, 2003.
• USA holds a 12-7 edge in the series since the Warhawks joined the Sun Belt Conference prior to the 2006-07 campaign.
• The Jags have won the last three meetings in Mobile, with ULM's last victory at the Mitchell Center coming in a 67-54 decision on Feb. 25, 2016.
Senior Shines Again
Senior guard Shaforia Kines recorded her second double-double of the season and third of her career last time out at Louisiana after posting 20 points and a team-leading 15 rebounds; the latter total was a career high as well. It was the second time in the last three outings that she grabbed a double-figure rebound total after accomplishing the feat once in her first 107 appearances as a Jaguar, as she has now pulled down five or more boards in each of the last three contests after finishing with that figure once in the Jaguars' final nine non-conference games. It was the sixth occasion this year she has scored 20-plus, the same number of times she turned she the trick her first three seasons with the program, while it was the first time that an individual in the program has put up 20 or more points in three straight outings since Phyllis Kelly accomplished the feat in the final three games of her career from Feb. 29-March 7, 1996.
Lewis Leads Way In Lafayette
While Kines was scoring 20 points once again, it was actually Antoinette Lewis who led the squad in the contest after recording 23 points against the Ragin' Cajuns to go along with nine rebounds, three blocks and a pair of steals. Lewis posted her first 20-point game since scoring a career-best 36 in a Nov. 26 win over Mobile — which was the last time she led South in scoring — while it marked the first occasion she has posted 20 or more points against an NCAA Division I opponent since the Jags played Miami (Ohio) in the Preseason WNIT on Nov. 15. It was also the second outing in a row, and sixth time this season, that the junior center has been credited with multiple blocked shots and steals in the same game, as she enters play the only individual ranked in the top 10 in the Sun Belt in both categories.
Jones Just Keeps Going
G Savannah Jones has now scored in double digits each of the last four games after sinking a three-pointer with 16 seconds to go in the UL contest to finish the night with 12 points, with the guard adding seven rebounds as well. Jones shot better than 50 percent for the floor for the first time since the Jags' Nov. 30 victory over Tennessee State after connecting on 5-of-8 attempts from the floor, while on the other end of the floor the redshirt junior had both a steal and a blocked shot, making her just one of two individuals on the roster — Lewis is the other — to have a double-figure total this season in both categories.
Additional Notes From The Louisiana Game
• The Jaguars have now shot 50 percent or better from three-point range in two of their three outings in 2020.
• Eight of the Jaguars' 17 turnovers came in the final quarter, while UL finished with just eight in the contest.
• UL became the first opponent since Texas State on March 2 a year ago to end up with fewer than 10 turnovers against the Jags.
• The Ragin' Cajuns overcame an eight point differential in field-goal percentage by attempting 13 more shots than South.
• Ty'Reona Doucet's 18 rebounds matched the most by an opposing player this season, a total first recorded by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Emma Young on Nov. 14.
