TRIO FROM JAG GOLF NAMED ALL-AMERICA SCHOLARS BY GCAA

NORMAN, Okla. – Three members of the University of South Alabama men's golf program were named Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars by the Golf Coaches Association of America on Wednesday.

Peter Staalbo, Rasmus Karlsson and Yannick Schütz were all recognized for the first time in their careers by the organization, which honors individuals who are juniors or seniors academically and have played at least three full years at the collegiate level, recorded a season scoring average under 76.0 while participating in a minimum of 50 percent of their team's competitive rounds, maintained a cumulative grade-point average of 3.2 or better, and are of high moral character as well as in good standing at their college or university.

This year, the GCAA honored a total of 540 student-athletes including 266 from the NCAA Division I level.

Staalbo, who hails from Lejre, Denmark, finished with a 74.00 stroke average his final season at the collegiate level last year, shooting par or better in seven rounds while posting a pair of top-20 finishes.  That included firing a 3-under-par 141 36-hole total to tie for 13th place at the Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate to open the spring semester as well tying for 20th in the individual standings at the first tournament of the campaign, the Lone Star Invitational, following a season-best 3-under-par 69 in the second of two rounds.  Staalbo received his degree from South in economics and finance in May, graduating with a 3.81 cumulative grade-point average.

A native of Fiskars, Finland, Karlsson shot par or below on nine occasions a year ago while posting a 72.88 scoring average and three top-20 results.  The rising senior carded scores of 69 and 70 in the first and last rounds of the Linger Longer Invitational to tie for eighth individually, and he ended the year by setting a program record with a 10-under-par 203 54-hole total at the Sun Belt Conference Championship where he tied for third place in the final standings.  Karlsson is majoring in management and carrying a cumulative GPA of 3.66.

Schütz paced the Jaguars this season with a 72.40 stroke average, five top-20 finishes — which included two top-10 performances — and 14 scores at or under par.  He tied for sixth place at the Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate with a two-day 5-under-par 139 total, and recorded a 69 in the last round of the Lone Star Invitational to tie for 10th place individually in that field as well.  The rising senior from Friolzheim, Germany, has a 3.39 cumulative GPA while majoring in marketing.

Both Karlsson and Schütz were selected third-team all-Sun Belt at the end of the spring campaign.

This is the 11th year in a row that at least one member of USA's men's golf program has been chosen a Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar, while it marks the first time since the 2014-15 season that multiple Jags have been honored.
