NEW ORLEANS – A pair of juniors from the University of South Alabama men's golf program were honored on Thursday with the announcement of the 2019 all-Sun Belt Conference teams by the league office.
Both Rasmus Karlsson and Yannick Schütz received third-team honors, marking the second time each has picked up all-league accolades in their time with the program. The former was chosen second-team all-Sun Belt following his freshman campaign, while the latter was a first-team selection a year ago.
Karlsson ranked second on the team with a 72.88 stroke average and three top-20 finishes during the 2018-19 campaign, posting a score of par or better on nine occasions. The Fiskars, Finland, native recorded a pair of top-10 results over the final five weeks of the spring, first with a 4-under-par 212 total at the Linger Longer Invitational before tying for third at the Sun Belt Championship with a career-low 10-under-par 203 54-hole figure. Karlsson fired a 6-under-par 65 in the second round of the league tournament — also a career-best figure — to set program records for low 18- and 54-hole scores at the event, and he also carded a 5-under-par 66 on the final day of the Fighting Irish Classic in October.
Schütz paced the squad for the second year in a row in scoring average (72.40), top-20 performances (five) and rounds at or under par (14) as he posted the low total on the team at four of the first five tournaments of the season. His best finish was tied for sixth at the Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate, where he broke par in both rounds while recording a 5-under-par 139 36-hole score, while he also ended up among the top 10 individually at the Lone Star Invitational to begin the campaign following a final round 3-under-par 69. Schütz — who hails from Friolzheim, Germany — shot par or better in two of three rounds at the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational and Old Waverly Collegiate Championship on his way to top-20 results at both tournaments, and he was the only Jaguar to go 2-0 at the Jerry Weeks Match Play.
It's the 29th straight season that South's golf program has had at least one member named all-Sun Belt, with multiple Jags honored 21 times during that span. Since the 1981-82 season, a total of 39 Jags have garnered all-conference recognition on 67 occasions.
