Opening Tip
• South opens play in the Preseason WNIT with a Friday afternoon tip at UAB.
• The winner of this contest is scheduled to face the victor of a first-round match-up between Oklahoma and Prairie View A&M on Sunday.
• The Jaguars have participated in the postseason WNIT on four occasions — including last March when they advanced to the second round with a 73-71 win at Lamar — but this will be their first appearance in the preseason event since dropping an 87-61 decision at nationally-ranked Mississippi State on Nov. 15, 2002.
• The Jags and Blazers did not meet during the 2018-19 campaign after playing a home-and-home series the previous four years.
• UAB is one of two Conference USA opponents on South's schedule this season, with the Jaguars also slated to visit Southern Mississippi on Dec. 15.
Strong Start For Senior Guard
Shaforia Kines posted 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the floor in the Jags' season-opening contest against Rutgers on Tuesday, the 40th time in her career that she has reached double figures in the scoring column. Â The senior guard picked up where she left off a year ago, as she has now recorded 10 or more points in six of the last seven contests dating back to last season; during that stretch, Kines has paced South in scoring four times after sharing team-high honors with Damaya Telemaque against the Scarlet Knights.
Big Night On The Boards
C Antoinette Lewis led all players in the opener after tying a career high with 16 rebounds, the 20th game since the start of the 2017-18 campaign that she has recorded double digits in the category. Â After adding 14 points, the junior collected her 17th double-double marking the first time in her career that she has accomplished the feat in three consecutive outings; Lewis had double-figure totals in scoring and on the boards in both of the Jaguars' WNIT contests last March.
Back In Double Figures
Telemaque's performance was her first scoring 10-plus points since finishing with 16 in the Jags' regular-season finale against Appalachian State on March 9 last winter, which was the only time the guard ended up with a double-figure total in her last nine appearances a year ago. Â After leading USA in scoring in three of the first seven outings of her freshman season, the App State game was the only occasion Telemaque turned the trick after the Jaguars' Dec. 5 win at Alabama before sharing team-high honors with Kines on Tuesday.
Busting Out
In 14 appearances as a freshman last season Jala Buster totaled 22 points and 13 rebounds, but the sophomore took advantage of her first career start in the match-up with the Scarlet Knights to post seven and six, respectively. Â Not only did Buster finish with a career-best total on the glass, she shared game-high honors for the first time with three steals to match her output in the category all of last year.
Additional Notes From The Rutgers Game
• It was the first time since the regular-season finale last winter that the Jaguars have finished with fewer than 10 turnovers.
• The Jaguars' 38 free-throw attempts were the most they have shot since going to the line 43 times in a Nov. 21, 2005, victory over Southern Miss at the Mitchell Center.
• USA's three three-pointers were the fewest made by the team at home since connecting on three against Little Rock on Jan. 12 last season.
• The Jags were held under 30 percent shooting from the field just once last year.
• South's bench contributed one point in the contest, the fewest reserves have supplied since also scoring a point in a 49-44 win over Georgia State on March 7, 2017, in the opening round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
