MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama volleyball team will hit the road for a pair of Sun Belt Conference East Division matches this weekend.
USA (10-5, 2-0 Sun Belt) will face Georgia State (4-9, 0-2 Sun Belt) Fri., Oct. 4, at 5:30 p.m. at GSU Sports Arena in Atlanta. The Jags will then travel to Statesboro, Ga., for a 5:30 p.m. (CT) match on Sat., Oct. 5, with Georgia Southern (5-8, 0-2 Sun Belt) at Hanner Fieldhouse. Friday's match at Georgia State will be streamed live and available through PantherVision HD, and can be accessed through the Jaguar volleyball schedule page at USAJaguars.com. Saturday's match at Georgia Southern will be broadcast live and available through ESPN+, and can also be accessed through the Jaguar volleyball schedule page or at WatchESPN.com. South Alabama carries a six-match win streak into Friday's contest at Georgia State after defeating Arkansas State and Little Rock in four sets each last weekend at Jag Gym to open Sun Belt play. USA ranks second in the Sun Belt in hitting percentage (.244), and fourth in opponent hitting percentage (.175). In Sun Belt matches, the Jags rank second in hitting percentage (.284), fourth in service aces per set (1.25), and fifth in kills per set (14.17) and blocks per set (1.83).
Kelley Hartman leads the league in hitting percentage (.397), and Rachael DeMarcus ranks fifth in assists per set (9.40). Ashlyn Roberts ranks seventh in digs per set (4.20), while Meaghan Jones ranks eighth in kills per set (3.20). In conference matches, Hartman ranks second in the league in blocks per set (1.42), Jones ranks third in kills per set (4.17), Iva Durdanovic ranks fourth in hitting percentage (.393) and fifth in service aces per set (0.55), and Roberts ranks tied for third in digs per set (5.00).
Georgia State ranks second in the conference in digs per set (15.73), third in blocks per set (2.02), and fourth in opponent hitting percentage (.175). Georgia Southern ranks 11th in the league in assists per set (10.35) and kills per set (11.17).
The Panthers enter Friday's matchup with a three-game losing skid after falling at Appalachian State and Coastal Carolina in four sets last weekend following a five-set loss to Brown on Sept. 22 in Atlanta. Georgia State is 1-1 at home this season. Georgia Southern enters the week with a four-match losing streak after falling at Coastal Carolina in straight sets and at Appalachian State in four sets last weekend following consecutive losses to Tennessee and East Tennessee State in Knoxville, Tenn., on Sept. 21.
The Jaguars hold a 12-4 all-time lead over Georgia State in a series that began in 1976. USA has won the last four meetings between the schools, with GSU's last win over USA coming in four sets in Atlanta in 2016. South Alabama swept both meetings last season.
Georgia Southern holds a 7-5 all-time lead over South Alabama in a series that dates back to 2010. The schools split a pair of matches last season, with the road team earning the victory in each contest. USA has won the last two meetings in Statesboro, and last loss to the Eagles at Hanner Fieldhouse in five sets in 2016.
