LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The University of South Alabama volleyball team fell to Little Rock in four sets (20-25, 25-18, 21-25, 23-25) in Friday's Sun Belt Conference opener at Jack Stephens Center.
USA (6-8, 0-1 Sun Belt) will return to action Sunday when it faces Arkansas State at noon in a Sun Belt Conference match at First National Bank Arena in Jonesboro, Ark.
GAME FACTS
- South Alabama cut the Little Rock lead to 17-15 in the opening set on a kill by Hannah Harris, but the Trojans responded with a 5-1 run to take a 22-16 lead. Little Rock earned set point at 24-18 on a kill from Mya Robinson, and clinched the set 25-20 on a Jaguar attack error.
- The Jaguars went on a 6-0 scoring run early in the second set, highlighted by kills from Alexis Silver, Harris and Parker Harrell, to take a 10-4 lead. USA pushed its lead to 16-9 later in the set on a 3-0 run via a kill by Morgan Stalcup and consecutive kills from Harris. The Jags later earned set point at 24-17 on a Trojan service error, and clinched the set 25-18 on a kill by Meaghan Jones.
- A 5-0 Little Rock run early in set three that featured a pair of blocks and one service ace gave the Trojans a 9-3 lead. South Alabama used a 3-0 run later in the third set on a kill by Silver and a pair of ASU attack errors to cut its deficit to 20-14. The Trojans earned set point at 24-18 on a kill from Laura Jansen, and clinched the set 25-21 on a block-assist by Belissa Guidotti and Jansen to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
- The Jags cut the Trojans' lead to 7-6 early in set four after a block by Stalcup, kill by Silver and Little Rock attack error. South Alabama went on a 3-0 run midway through the fourth set, highlighted by kills from Durdanovic and Harrell, to take a 14-13 lead. A second 3-0 Jaguar run that featured a kill by Silver and block-assist by Stalcup and Durdanovic pushed the USA advantage to 18-15. Little Rock later tied the score at 20-20 on a kill by Taylor Lindberg and consecutive blocks by Pamela Zuluaga and Veronica Marin. The Trojans earned match point at 24-23 on a kill by Maritza Mesa, and clinched the set 25-23 on a service ace by Marin to seal the match 3-1.
NOTES
- The Jags posted a .433 team hitting percentage in set two with 16 kills and three errors on 30 total attacks.
- Jones finished with a game-high 12 kills, along with two digs and one block.
- Harris added seven kills and three digs, while Silver finished with seven kills, a .636 hitting percentage and one dig.
- Rachael DeMarcus recorded a team-high 24 assists and also added four digs. Ashlyn Roberts led the team with 13 digs, and also added three assists, one service ace and one kill.
- Little Rock (9-5, 1-0 Sun Belt) recorded 19 total team blocks, led by Marin who finished with five solo blocks and eight block-assists for 13 total in addition to 11 kills, two service aces and three digs.
