SOUTH ALABAMA GOLF ONCE AGAIN NAMED GCAA ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM

NORMAN, Okla. – The Golf Coaches Association of America released its 2017-18 18Birdies Team Academic Awards on Friday, and for the 10th straight year the University of South Alabama men's golf program was included on the list.

The Jaguars were named an All-Academic Team by the organization, which includes programs that recorded a grade-point average of 3.0 or better during the academic year.  To be eligible for GCAA All-Academic Team honors a college or university must submit the GPAs for each player on its official squad list for the academic year.

Seven of the nine individuals on South's roster recorded a 3.0 or higher GPA last season, with the group of Spencer Arnold, Justin Choi, Peter Staalbo and Stephen Wall all above a 3.8.  Also finishing with a mark of 3.3 or better were Rasmus Karlsson, Jason Mendel and Yannick Schütz; the latter was a first-team all-Sun Belt Conference selection and earned an individual berth to the NCAA Kissimmee Regional on the course as well.

As a group, the Jaguars posted a 3.41 grade-point average during the 2017-18 season.

In competition, in addition to qualifying for match play at the SBC Championship the Jags won the Southern Collegiate Match Play for the second year in a row while also placing among the top three at both the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational and the Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate.
