ATLANTA – The University of South Alabama women's tennis team pulled out a 4-3 win over Georgia State Sunday at Piedmont Park in Atlanta.
DOUBLES
-Because of a lack of players, Georgia State had to forfeit on court 3.
-At No. 2, junior Alexandria Stiteler (Bradenton, Fla.) and freshman Yu Fujioka (Funabashi, Japan) fell to Lara Vovk and Daniela Ramirez 6-3.
-Junior Patricia Martins (Lisbon, Portugal) and freshman Milka Pasanen (Pieksamaki, Finland) secured the doubles point with a 6-3 win over Kristin Rehse and Damira Muminovic on court 1.
SINGLES
-On courts 5 and 6, Georgia State forfeited singles points due to a lack of players, giving USA a 3-0 lead.
-At No. 1, Rehse defeated Stiteler 6-2, 6-1, and junior Alina Zolotareva (Barnaul, Russia) fell to Ramirez 6-3, 6-2 on court 2.
-Freshman Maxine Palmen (Sittard, Netherlands) lost a 6-3, 6-2 decision to Vovk at No. 4 to tie the match at 3-3.
-Fujioka clinched the victory for the Jaguars by defeating Muminovic 7-5, 5-7, 7-5 on court 3.
NOTES
-With the win, South Alabama improves to 17-2 on the year, while Georgia State drops to 9-14.
-Fujioka is unbeaten in singles this spring at 18-0.
-Stiteler's loss in singles snaps an eight-match win streak. She is 14-2 in singles this season overall.
-In doubles, Martins improved to 13-2 overall, and Pasanen is 6-2 on the year. The duo is 5-0 in doubles matches this spring.
-Up next for USA is a match against Xavier on Saturday at the Buck Bouldin Tennis Center in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
-Xavier is 11-6 on the year, and the Musketeers are coming off a 4-2 win against Creighton.
