WOMEN’S TENNIS TOPS UTA TO ADVANCE TO SBC SEMIFINALS

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. –
The No. 4 seed University of South Alabama women's tennis team led the whole match in a 4-1 victory over No. 5 Texas-Arlington in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Conference Championships Friday at the Peachtree City Tennis Center.
 
The Jaguars advance to play No. 1 seed Troy in the semifinals Saturday at 9 a.m.
 
DOUBLES
-On court 1, Momoka Horiguchi and Nanaka Takeuchi defeated freshmen Milka Pasanen (Pieksamaki, Finland) and Maxine Palmen (Sittard, Netherlands) 6-1.
-The Jags bounced back when junior Alexandria Stiteler (Bradenton, Fla.) and freshman Yu Fujioka (Funabashi, Japan) bested Lucia Natal and Anna Wichert 7-5 at No. 2.
-Junior Alina Zolotareva (Barnaul, Russia) and freshman Nikola Kohoutova (Kralupy Nad Vltavou, Czech Republic) clinched the doubles point with a 7-6 (6-2) win over Carla Cerdan Vives and Almudena Boza on court 3.
 
SINGLES
-Stiteler, ranked No. 111 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, put USA up 2-0 by dropping Wichert 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1.
-Palmen fell 6-1, 7-6 (6-3) to Boza on court 4, but Pasanen came back with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 victory at No. 5.
-Fujioka secured the win for South Alabama by defeating Natal 7-5, 7-5 on court 3.
 
NOTES
-The victory gives USA a 19-3 record on the year, while UTA falls to 11-10.
-The Jaguars and the Mavericks have met four times in the last five years in the Sun Belt Conference Championships, and South Alabama has won each contest.
-Fujioka is undefeated in singles this spring at 21-0, and she has the highest dual win percentage overall in school history.
-Stiteler improved to 16-2 in singles on the year, and she ranks first in win percentage at the No. 1 flight (.814) and second in total wins at No. 1 (48) in South Alabama's history.
-This is the sixth straight year USA will be in the semifinals of the SBC Championships.
-South Alabama has a 13-4 series record over Troy, including a 5-2 win this season the Stevens Tennis Complex in Conway, S.C.
-The Trojans have won their last six matches, and Rawia Elsisi earned Sun Belt Coach of the Year honors this season.
