MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama volleyball team will host a pair of Sun Belt Conference East Division matches this weekend at Jag Gym to close its regular-season schedule.
USA (13-14, 7-7 Sun Belt) will host Coastal Carolina (11-11, 10-4 Sun Belt) Fri., Nov. 9 at 6:30 p.m., and will square off with Sun Belt East Division leader Appalachian State (19-7, 11-3 Sun Belt) Sun., Nov. 11, in its regular-season finale. Both matches will be streamed live and available for free through JagNationTV.com, while live stats will also be available through the multimedia section USAJaguars.com. Sunday's match will also serve as Senior Day, with each senior being recognized in a pre-match ceremony.
The Jaguars enter the final week of the regular season in third place in the Sun Belt East Division after winning their last two contests. USA swept Troy on Oct. 31 in Troy, Ala., before defeating the Trojans in four sets last Saturday at Jag Gym. South Alabama ranks third in the conference in hitting percentage (.225), and fourth in service aces per set (1.31). In conference matches, the Jags also rank third in hitting percentage (.220), and rank fifth in blocks per set (2.23) and service aces per set (1.23).
Kelley Hartman ranks fifth in the league in service aces per set (0.31), and ninth in hitting percentage (.301). Morgan Stalcup ranks fifth in hitting percentage (.347), while Ashlyn Roberts ranks tied for sixth in service aces per set (0.30). Rachael DeMarcus, who earned Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Week honors this week, ranks eighth in assists per set (6.59).
In Sun Belt matches, Stalcup ranks second in the league in hitting percentage (.424), while Roberts ranks fourth in service aces per set (0.35). DeMarcus ranks seventh in assists per set (7.89) in league matches, while Hannah Harris (2.96) and Meaghan Jones (2.92) rank ninth and 10th, respectively, in kills per set.
Coastal Carolina carries a five-match winning streak into Friday's match with the Jaguars. The Chanticleers defeated Georgia Southern in four sets last Friday to open the weekend before sweeping Georgia State in Conway, S.C., on Sunday. CCU is just 2-7 in road matches this season.
CCU ranks second in the Sun Belt in digs per set (15.96), and fourth in opponent hitting percentage (.183). In league matches, the Chanticleers lead the conference in opponent hitting percentage (.141) and digs per set (17.27), and rank third in kills per set (13.18). Anett Nemeth ranks third in the Sun Belt in kills per set (3.77), while Kyla Manning ranks fifth with 3.16 kills per set. In conference matches, Sydney Alvis leads the league in digs per set (5.18), while Nemeth ranks third in kills per set (3.76) and Manning ranks fifth (3.47).
Appalachian State carries a six-match winning streak into the weekend after sweeping Georgia State and Georgia Southern last weekend in Boone, N.C. The Mountaineers will face Troy on Friday at 6:30 p.m. in Troy, Ala., before squaring off with USA on Sunday to close the regular season.
App State leads the Sun Belt in service aces per set (1.56), and ranks second in kills per set (13.82) and assists per set (12.85). In conference matches, the Mountaineers lead in service aces per set (1.41) and rank second in kills per set (13.96) and assists per set (12.98).
Emma Longley ranks second in the conference in kills per set (3.90), and Becky Porter leads the league in assists per set (10.78). Emma Reilly (0.40) and Kara Spicer (0.36) rank second and third, respectively, in service aces per set. In Sun Belt matches, Spicer leads the league in service aces per set (0.39), while Porter leads in assists per set (11.02). Longley ranks second in kills per set (4.16) in conference contests.
South Alabama holds a 5-4 all-time series lead over App State after the Mountaineers defeated the Jaguars in straight sets on Oct. 26 in Boone. The Jaguars swept App State in Mobile last season. Coastal Carolina holds a 5-1 all-time series lead over USA after defeating the Jags in four sets on Oct. 28 in Conway. The Chanticleers have won the last five meetings in the series dating back to 2016.
