MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama volleyball team will close a four-match road swing with a pair of Sun Belt Conference East Division matches in Georgia this weekend.
USA (8-11, 2-4 Sun Belt) will face Georgia State (5-10, 2-3 Sun Belt) at 5:30 p.m. (CT) on Fri., Oct. 12, at the GSU Sports Arena in Atlanta. The Jaguars will then travel to Statesboro, Ga., to square off with Georgia Southern (7-12, 2-3 Sun Belt) at 5:30 p.m. (CT) on Sat., Oct. 13, at Hanner Fieldhouse. The Georgia State match will be streamed live and available through the Jaguar volleyball schedule page at USAJaguars.com, while the Georgia Southern match will be broadcast live via ESPN+. Live stats for each match will also be available through the multimedia section of USAJaguars.com.
South Alabama enters the weekend tied for fifth in the Sun Belt East Division after splitting a pair of matches last weekend in Louisiana. The Jags swept ULM last Friday in Monroe, La., before falling in four sets at Louisiana on Saturday.
USA ranks third in the Sun Belt in hitting percentage (.237), and fifth in service aces per set (1.28). In conference matches, the Jaguars rank second in the league in hitting percentage (.249). Kelley Hartman ranks third in the Sun Belt in service aces per set (0.39), and seventh in hitting percentage (.310). Morgan Stalcup ranks fourth in hitting percentage (.359), while Parker Harrell ranks ninth in assists per set (5.70) and Ashlyn Roberts ranks ninth in digs per set (3.45).
In Sun Belt matches, Stalcup ranks second in the league in hitting percentage (.498) and ninth in blocks per set (1.00), while Hartman ranks tied for fourth in service aces per set (0.38) and Rachael DeMarcus ranks 10th in assists per set (5.67).
Georgia State will host Coastal Carolina Tuesday afternoon in a match, originally scheduled for Sept. 21, which was re-scheduled due to Hurricane Florence. The Panthers split a pair of matches last weekend in Atlanta, defeating UTA in four sets on Friday before falling to Texas State in straight sets on Saturday.
GSU ranks fourth in the conference in blocks per set (2.21), but ranks 10th in the league in kills per set (11.34) and last in hitting percentage (.148). In Sun Belt matches, the Panthers rank second in service aces per set (1.35), but are 10th in hitting percentage (.155), and 11th in kills per set (10.80) and assists per set (10.30).
USA defeated Georgia State in straight sets in a matchup on Sept. 29 in Mobile. The Jags posted a .313 team hitting percentage in that match, led by Hannah Harris who finished with nine kills and a .467 hitting percentage. South Alabama holds an 11-4 all-time series lead over Georgia State.
Georgia Southern will host Troy on Friday before taking on South Alabama on Saturday in Statesboro. The Eagles rank second in the Sun Belt in blocks per set (2.51), but are 11th in hitting percentage (.153), assists per set (10.07) and kills per set (10.89). In Sun Belt matches, Georgia Southern ranks second in the league in blocks per set (2.45), but are last in service aces per set (0.76).
South Alabama fell to Georgia Southern in five sets on Sept. 28 in Mobile. Harris recorded 14 kills in the match to lead the Jaguars, but the Eagles' Maddie Bryant posted 21 kills to help the Eagles snap a two-game losing skid to USA. Georgia Southern holds a 7-4 all-time lead in the series entering Saturday's contest.
