CONWAY, S.C. – The University of South Alabama volleyball team fell to Coastal Carolina in four sets (25-19, 21-25, 25-27, 10-25) Sunday in a Sun Belt Conference East Division match at The HTC Center.
South Alabama (11-14, 5-7 Sun Belt) won the opening set of the match, but Coastal Carolina (9-11, 8-4 Sun Belt) rallied to win the next three sets and clinch the match.
USA will return to action Wed., Oct. 31, when it faces Troy at 6 p.m. in a Sun Belt Conference East Division match in Troy, Ala.
GAME FACTS
- South Alabama held a one-point lead at 6-5 following a kill by Rachael DeMarcus, but CCU answered with a 4-0 scoring run to take a 9-6 lead. But the Jags responded with a 3-0 after three straight kills by Meaghan Jones to tie the score at 9-9. A 4-0 Jaguar run that featured kills by Jones and Hannah Harris, a service ace from Arissa Chappell and a block by Harris pushed the USA advantage to 13-11. South Alabama broke a 19-19 tie with a 6-0 run, highlighted by three kills from Harris, to close the set. USA earned set point at 24-19 on a kill by Harris, and clinched the set 25-19 on a bad Chanticleer set for a 1-0 lead in the match.
- CCU went on a 6-1 run late in the second set that featured three kills by Kyla Manning to take a 22-18 lead. The Chanticleers earned set point at 24-19 on a service ace by Dora Lulic, and clinched the set 25-21 on a kill by Ani Bozdeva to tie the match at one set apiece.
- CCU used a 4-0 run early in set three to take an 11-8 lead, but the Jags answered with a kill by Hannah Johnson and consecutive service aces from Katelyn Lochner to tie the score at 11-11. Later in the set, South Alabama gained a 22-20 advantage following a kill by Alexis Silver. CCU then tied the score 22-22 before a kill by Kelley Hartman gave the Jags a 23-22 lead. CCU answered with consecutive points, earning set point at 24-23 on a block by Bozdeva, but a kill by Kelley Hartman tied the score 24-24. CCU earned set point at 25-24 on a Jaguar service error, but Jones responded with a kill to tie the score at 25. The Chanticleers then earned set point and clinched the set 27-25 on back-to-back kills by Anett Nemeth to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
- A kill by Jones in set four cut the Chanticleer lead to 6-4, but CCU responded with an 8-1 run to take a 14-5 lead. A 5-0 CCU run later in the set pushed the Chanticleer lead to 22-9. Coastal Carolina earned match point at 24-10 on a kill by Manning, and clinched the match 3-1 on a second straight kill from Manning.
NOTES
- South Alabama recorded a season-high 14 total team blocks, while CCU posted 10.
- Jones finished with a career-high 14 kills and shared the team-high total with Harris, who also posted 14 kills to lead the Jaguars.
- Kelley Hartman recorded eight total blocks with six solo and two block-assists, and also added 10 kills, two assists and three digs.
- Rachael DeMarcus finished with a team-high 34 assists, two kills and three digs.
- CCU posted a .600 team hitting percentage in set four with 17 kills and two errors on 25 total attacks.
