MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama volleyball team will host a pair of Sun Belt Conference matches this weekend at Jag Gym.
USA (10-11, 4-4 Sun Belt) will square off with Sun Belt West Division leader Texas State (18-5, 9-0 Sun Belt) Friday at 6:30 p.m., and will host UTA (12-7, 6-3 Sun Belt) at 6:30 p.m. Saturday evening at Jag Gym. Both matches will be streamed live and available for free through JagNationTV.com. Live stats will also be available through the multimedia section of USAJaguars.com. The Jaguar promotional schedule will feature Friday's match as the Dig Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness, while Saturday's match will be SAAC (Student-Athlete Advisory Committee) Night at Jag Gym.
South Alabama ranks third in the conference in hitting percentage (.230) and service aces per set (1.36) entering the weekend. Kelley Hartman ranks third in the Sun Belt in service aces per set (0.37), while Ashlyn Roberts ranks 10th in digs per set (3.45). Parker Harrell ranks ninth in the league in assists per set (5.70), and Rachael DeMarcus ranks 10th with an average 5.60 assists per set.
In conference matches, the Jaguars rank third in hitting percentage (.229), and fourth in service aces per set (1.29). Morgan Stalcup ranks third in hitting percentage (.424) in Sun Belt contests, while Hartman and Roberts rank tied for fifth in service aces per set (0.32). DeMarcus ranks eighth in assists per set (6.65) in league matches.
Texas State carries a 13-match win streak into Friday's match. Of the Bobcats' five losses, four of them came to ranked opponents. Texas State's last loss came on Sept. 8, when it fell to No. 16 Kentucky in four sets in San Marcos, Texas. The Bobcats swept Appalachian State last weekend, followed by a win in four sets over Sun Belt East Division leader Coastal Carolina. Texas State is 7-2 in road matches this season.
The Bobcats lead the Sun Belt in hitting percentage (.264), kills per set (14.39) and assists per set (13.80), and ranks second in digs per set (15.79). In conference matches, the Bobcats lead the league in hitting percentage (.308), kills per set (15.36) and assists per set (14.76), and rank second in opponent hitting percentage (.177). Tyeranee Scott leads the Sun Belt in hitting percentage (.487) in league matches, while Emily DeWalt leads in assists per set (11.82).
UTA will face Troy at 6:30 p.m. Friday in Troy, Ala., before squaring off with the Jaguars Saturday evening. The Mavericks enter the weekend in second place in the Sun Belt West Division, and carry a three-match win streak into their match with Troy. UTA swept Coastal Carolina and Appalachian State last weekend in Arlington, Texas. The Mavericks are 3-4 in road matches this season, and have dropped two of their last three road conference matches.
UTA leads the Sun Belt in digs per set (16.30), and ranks third in opponent hitting percentage (.180). The Mavericks rank second in digs per set (16.82) in league matches. UTA's Madison Hill ranks second in the conference in hitting percentage (.373), while Madelyn St. Germain ranks third in digs per set (4.45). Alex Janak ranks second in service aces per set (0.42) in conference contests.
Texas State holds a 7-3 all-time series lead over the Jaguars after USA swept the Bobcats last season in San Marcos. UTA holds a 7-2 all-time series lead over the Jags after South Alabama defeated the Mavericks in four sets last season in Arlington. USA is 2-2 all-time against Texas State in Mobile, and 1-2 all-time against UTA in Jag Gym.
