JAG VOLLEYBALL TO HOST PAIR OF SBC EAST DIVISION MATCHES



MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama volleyball team will host a pair of Sun Belt Conference East Division matches this weekend at Jag Gym.

USA (7-5, 2-0 SBC) will host Georgia State at 6:30 p.m. Friday, followed by a 6:30 p.m. matchup against Georgia Southern on Saturday. Both matches will be streamed live and available for free at JagNationTV.com. Live stats for each match will also be available through the multimedia section of USAJaguars.com.

South Alabama enters the weekend tied with Coastal Carolina for the East Division lead in the SBC. The Jaguars own the best overall record in the division at 7-5. USA swept a pair of matches last weekend at Texas State and Texas-Arlington to open SBC play, and has won four of its last five contests dating back to a Sept. 9 win over Clemson at the War Eagle Invitational in Auburn, Ala.

Georgia State (7-8, 1-1 SBC) split a pair of matches in Louisiana last weekend to open SBC play. The Panthers defeated Louisiana-Monroe in five sets before falling at Louisiana-Lafayette in straight sets. GSU is 1-2 in road matches this season.

Georgia Southern (3-8, 1-1 SBC) will host South Carolina State in a midweek match Tuesday before facing Troy at 6:30 p.m. Friday in Troy, Ala. The Eagles also split a pair of matches last weekend to open conference play. ULL defeated Georgia Southern in four sets last Friday in Lafayette, La. The Eagles rebounded for a straight-sets win over Louisiana-Monroe the following day, which snapped a six-game losing streak.

USA leads the SBC in blocks per set (2.69) as well as opponent hitting percentage (.164). The Jags rank fourth in service aces with an average of 1.24 per set. Kelley Hartman leads the league in blocks with an average of 1.49 per set, while Abby Baker ranks fourth in the conference in digs per set (4.44). Baker averaged 5.86 digs per set in two matches last weekend after recording 41 digs in seven sets.

Georgia State leads the SBC in service aces per set (1.60), but ranks no higher than fifth in any other statistical category in the league. The Panthers enter the weekend tied with Appalachian State and Georgia Southern for third place in the SBC East Division.

South Alabama owns an 8-4 all-time lead over Georgia State in a series that began in 1976. The teams split a pair of matches last season, with the home team claiming victory in each of those matchups. Georgia Southern holds a 6-2 all-time lead over USA in a series that dates back to 2010. The schools also split a pair of matches last season, with the home team also claiming victory in each of those contests.
