MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama volleyball team will travel to Oxford, Miss., this weekend for a pair of matches with Mississippi to close its non-conference schedule.
USA (4-4) was originally scheduled to play three matches at the FIU Invitational in Miami, but damages brought by Hurricane Irma forced tournament officials to cancel the event. The Jaguars will square off with Mississippi at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Gillom Sports Center, followed by a 1:30 p.m. match on Saturday. Live stats for both matches will be available through OleMissSports.com or the Jaguar volleyball schedule page at USAJaguars.com.
UM (8-3) was originally scheduled to compete at the UCF Tournament in Orlando, Fla., this weekend, but it was also cancelled due to Hurricane Irma. The Rebels enter the weekend with a four-game winning streak after sweeping the Ole Miss Classic last weekend in Oxford before knocking off Northern Colorado in straight sets Tuesday in Greely, Colo. UM is 6-1 at home this season.
The Jaguars enter the weekend having won four of their last five matches after going 1-1 last weekend at the War Eagle Invitational in Auburn, Ala. USA fell to Auburn in straight sets, but rebounded to sweep Clemson in straight sets to finish with an even record on the weekend. South Alabama owns the best overall record in the Sun Belt Conference East Division entering weekend play.
USA ranks second in the league in opponent hitting percentage (.155), third in blocks per set (2.41) and fourth in service aces per set (1.52). Jaguar middle blocker Kelley Hartman leads the SBC in blocks per set (1.48), which ranks 25th nationally, while Abby Baker ranks sixth in digs per set (4.24). Arissa Chappell ranks tied for ninth in the conference in service aces per set (0.34).
Mississippi holds a 5-2 all-time lead over South Alabama in a series that began in 1977. USA won the last meeting 3-1, which came in 2005 in Mobile. The Rebels' last win over the Jaguars came in a 3-1 victory in 1988 in Oxford.
