WOMEN’S TENNIS BLANKS GEORGIA SOUTHERN IN SUN BELT CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The University of South Alabama women's tennis team swept Georgia Southern 4-0 in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Conference Championships Friday.

With the win, the Jaguars improved to 20-4, while the Eagles dropped to 11-12.

USA took the doubles point with victories on court Nos. 2 and 3. Sophomore Alexandria Stiteler (Bradenton, Fla.) and senior Monica Mitta (Fairhope, Ala.) dropped Lindsay Truscott and Mariana Ranzahuer 6-0 at No. 2, and senior Laura Matuskova (Bratislava, Slovakia) and sophomore Alina Zolotareva (Barnaul, Russia) bested Ella Monsey and Emilia Bujan 6-2 on court No. 3.

"I thought we played well," said USA head coach Jaco Keyser. "We played them a couple of weeks ago and they're a good, talented team. We came out and played some good doubles, and we kind of pulled away in the end."

Senior Laura Valkova (Piestany, Slovakia) began singles with a 6-0, 6-3 win against Arianne de Winter at No. 2, and Matuskova put the Jags up 3-0 by defeating Ranzahuer 6-2, 6-1 on court No. 5. Mitta clinched the victory for USA with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Bujan at No. 3.

"When we have the discipline to go back to practices, we're usually a pretty good team," Keyser said. "We've been on a nice little streak, winning 12 in a row. Our confidence is high and I can't feel better about it."

The Jaguars move on to face Georgia State Saturday at 10 a.m.
