WOMEN’S TENNIS EXTENDS WIN STREAK, BLANKS MIDDLE TENNESSEE

RESULTS

MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama women's tennis team picked up their tenth straight win Friday by defeating Middle Tennessee 4-0 at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.

With the win, the Jaguars improved to 18-4 on the season, while the Blue Raiders dropped to 9-14.

"They're a good team," said USA head coach Jaco Keyser. "They're talented, and we knew it coming in."

The Jaguars took the doubles point with a pair of 6-1 victories. Senior Laura Valkova (Piestany, Slovakia) and sophomore Patricia Martins (Lisbon, Portugal) bested Sarah Sediri and Luisa Zirilli on court No. 1, and sophomore Alexandria Stiteler (Bradenton, Fla.) and senior Monica Mitta (Fairhope, Ala) secured the point by defeating Costanza Magazzini and Lidia Burrows at No. 2.

"We played a great doubles point," Keyser said. "We put some pressure on them, and for a while, it looked like we were going to run through them, but they're talented and competed hard. We did a good job closing out those matches."

In singles, sophomore Alina Zolotareva (Barnaul, Russia) opened with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Sediri on court No. 6, and Stiteler gave the Jags a 3-0 lead by dropping Maria Josefina Zehnder 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1. Mitta clinched the victory for USA with a 6-1, 6-4 win against Burrows on court No. 3.

"They did a good job focusing on what we do in practice, not getting scared of the moment, and trying to execute practice over and over again," said Keyser. "We just keep on getting better, little by little. Sunday is going to be a tough match."

The Jaguars close out their regular season Sunday at 11 a.m. against Troy.
