MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama women's tennis team will wrap up the 2017 regular season with matches Friday and Sunday at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.
The Jaguars will take on former Sun Belt Conference rival Middle Tennessee on Friday at 2 p.m. before facing Troy on Sunday at 11 a.m.
South Alabama is 17-4 and has won a season-high nine matches in a row, with the last four coming over Sun Belt competition. The Jags swept the Sun Belt Shootout last weekend with victories over Georgia State (5-2) and Coastal Carolina (4-1).
In those last four matches, USA is a combined 19-3 in singles, including 11-0 on courts 1, 2 and 6, and has posted a 7-2 mark in doubles.
"I think we're getting close to playing our best tennis of the year," USA head coach
Jaco Keyser said. "Every single time I feel like we're getting slightly better, and hopefully this weekend can be a step forward once again."
Middle Tennessee is 9-13 on the year but has won three of its last four outings.
Costanza Magazzini has a team-high 12 wins this spring and currently possesses a four-match win streak, while the doubles pair of
Marta Peris Herrero and
Josefina Zehnder have won their last eight matches.
The Blue Raiders have taken five of the last six meetings in the series after dropping the first 19.
Troy is 5-1 in its last six matches after a 4-10 start, including a win over No. 48 Tulane.
Alicia Rodriguez leads the Trojans with an 11-2 record and a nine-match win streak, while No. 1
Sanae Ohta was named the conference's player of the week after four wins in singles and doubles combined.
"On the surface, according to the records, it looks like the two teams are struggling, but they have a lot of talented players," Keyser said. "Troy's playing some good tennis, having beaten nationally-ranked Tulane this past weekend, and we know all of Middle Tennessee's players, so we'll have a couple of tough matches."
