MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama women's tennis team picked up three straight-sets wins in singles to defeat Southern Miss 4-1 Saturday morning at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.
The Jaguars improve to 10-4 on the year while the Golden Eagles fall to 5-5.
"That was a rock-solid performance by the girls today," USA head coach
Jaco Keyser said. "It was a good blend of old-fashioned toughness and some good discipline in our point play. If we continue on this path, then there is no doubt in my mind that we will eventually maximize our potential as a team."
After picking up the doubles point, sophomore
Alina Zolotareva (Barnaul, Russia) doubled the Jags' advantage with a 6-3, 6-2 win over
Elena Roca on court 6.
Senior
Monica Mitta (Fairhope, Ala.) put South Alabama on the brink of victory with a 6-1, 7-5 victory at No. 3 against
Rikeetha Pereira, but USM's
Tjasa Jerse picked up a point when she defeated sophomore
Patricia Martins (Lisbon, Portugal) on court 5.
The Jaguars put the match away at No. 2 after senior
Laura Valkova (Piestany, Slovakia) topped
Alex Kitchen 7-5, 6-2.
In doubles, sophomore
Alexandria Stiteler (Bradenton, Fla.) and Mitta blanked Roca and Pereira on court 2, and Zolotareva and senior
Laura Matuskova (Bratislava, Slovakia) earned the point with a 6-3 victory over Jerse and
Tzu-Hui Chen at No. 3.
The Jaguars will close out their three-match homestand Wednesday at 2 p.m. against USC Upstate.
