WOMEN’S TENNIS BLANKS APPALACHIAN STATE

Results

STATESBORO, Ga.
– The University of South Alabama women's tennis team extended their win streak to seven matches as they swept Appalachian State 7-0 in straight sets Sunday at the Wallis Tennis Center.

With the win, the Jaguars improved to 15-4 on the year, while the Mountaineers fell to 4-16.

"We had another solid performance today," said USA head coach Jaco Keyser

The Jags took an early 1-0 lead by securing the doubles point. On court No. 2, sophomore Alexandria Stiteler (Bradenton, Fla.) and senior Monica Mitta (Fairhope, Ala.) dispatched Heidi Swope and McKayla Zupan 6-2. Sophomore Patricia Martins (Lisbon, Portugal) and senior Laura Valkova (Piestany, Slovakia) clinched the doubles point with a 6-1 victory over Gabrielle Wreder and Megan Mullen at No. 1.

"Matches at 8 a.m. can always be tricky, but I thought we handled it very professionally," Keyser said.

Sophomore Alina Zolotareva (Barnaul, Russia) opened singles by defeating Mullen 6-1, 6-0 on court No. 6. Martins bested Melissa Machado 6-3, 6-0 at No. 4, and senior Laura Matuskova (Bratislava, Slovakia) won the clincher 6-1, 6-0 over Taylor Bygrave on court No. 5.

"Even though we won convincingly this weekend, it's crystal clear that we still have plenty of loose ends to tie up in order to play the kind of tennis that we are capable of," said Keyser.

In other singles action, Valkova dropped Rebecca Morse 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2, and Stiteler won 6-1, 6-3 against Swope on court No. 1. Mitta finished the day by beating Wreder 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3.

The Jaguars return to the court April 7 at 1 p.m. to take on Georgia State at home.
