WOMEN’S TENNIS DEFEATS GEORGIA SOUTHERN, PICKS UP SIXTH STRAIGHT WIN

STATESBORO, Ga. – The University of South Alabama women's tennis team won 6-1 against Georgia Southern Saturday at the Wallis Tennis Center.

The victory marks the sixth straight for the Jaguars as they improve to 14-4, while the Eagles dropped to 9-6 on the season.

"It was a solid performance today," said USA head coach Jaco Keyser

In doubles, the Jags took a 1-0 lead with identical 6-3 scores. Sophomore Alina Zolotareva (Barnaul, Russia) and senior Laura Matuskova (Bratislava, Slovakia) opened with a win against Ella Monsey and Emilia Bujan on court No. 3. Senior Laura Valkova (Piestany, Slovakia) and sophomore Patricia Martins (Lisbon, Portugal) clinched the doubles point by defeating Mariana Ranzahuer and Lindsay Truscott at No. 1.

"I thought we were engaged and had a good, professional approach after a long travel day and a couple of the girls fighting some sniffles and sneezes early in the week," Keyser said.

To begin singles, Zolotareva bested Monsey 6-3, 5-0 (ret.) at No. 6, and sophomore Alexandria Stiteler (Bradenton, Fla.) dropped Giulia Riepe 6-2, 6-1 on court No. 1. Matuskova secured the win for USA with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Ranzahuer at No. 5.

"It was a good effort and good competitive nature, but we need to take a step forward and be a lot tougher and execute a lot better for bigger periods of time," said Keyser.

In other singles action, Martins defeated Bujan 7-6, 6-4 on court No. 4, and Valkova beat Arianne Winter 4-6, 7-5, (10-8) at No. 2. Senior Monica Mitta (Fairhope, Ala.) fell to Truscott 6-2, 5-7, (10-7) at No. 3.

The Jaguars return to action Sunday at 7 a.m. to face Appalachian State.
