WOMEN’S TENNIS BLANKS SE LOUISIANA, EARNS EIGHTH STRAIGHT WIN

Results

MOBILE, Ala.
– The University of South Alabama women's tennis team picked up their eighth consecutive victory by sweeping Southeastern Louisiana 7-0 Friday at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.

With the win, the Jaguars improved to 8-1 this season, while the Lions dropped to 3-1.

"Winning is always good," said USA head coach Jaco Keyser. "We played some good tennis today."

In doubles, senior Laura Matuskova (Bratislava, Solvakia) and sophomore Alina Zolotareva (Barnaul, Russia) downed Lucia Bustamante and Natalie Duran 6-0 at No. 2. Sophomore Alexandria Stiteler (Bradenton, Fla.) and senior Monica Mitta (Fairhope, Ala.) secured the doubles point with a 6-0 victory over Dany Raygadas and Madina Vorotnikova on court No. 3.

"We came out and executed pretty well," Keyser said. "We competed extremely hard, and that's all we can ask for."

Stiteler opened singles by defeating Raygadas 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1, and Zolotareva put the Jags up 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-4 win against Dalina Dahlmans on court No. 5. Senior Laura Valkova (Piestany, Slovakia) clinched the win for the Jaguars by besting Fleur Holtkamp 6-1, 7-5 at No. 2.

"We were executing the basics pretty well," said Keyser. "That allowed us to construct points, and from there it's a snowball effect where good things happen for us."

In other singles action, sophomore Patricia Martins (Lisbon, Portugal) dropped Vorotnikova 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4, and freshman Leslie Soto Bustamante (Santiago, Chile) beat Duran 6-1, 6-3 on court No. 6. Mitta finished the day with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) win over Lucia Bustamante at No. 3.

"Here and there we had a bit of a letdown, but from a mental standpoint, we stayed strong, and as long as we keep on doing that, we'll be fine," Keyser said.

Earlier in doubles, Martins and Valkova fell to Dahlmans and Holtkamp 7-6 on court No. 1.

The Jags return to action Sunday at 11 a.m. to face off against No. 24 Mississippi State on the road.
