JAG VOLLEYBALL TO HOST PAIR OF SBC MATCHES TO CLOSE REGULAR SEASON



MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama volleyball team will close its regular season this weekend with a pair of Sun Belt Conference matches at Jag Gym.

USA (16-8, 11-3 SBC) will host SBC East Division leader Coastal Carolina at 5 p.m. on Friday, and will close the regular season with a 12:30 p.m. match on Sunday with Appalachian State. The Jaguars will honor its three seniors (Abby Baker, Kellyn Reeves & Symone Stephenson) on Sunday in a pregame ceremony as part of Senior Day. Both matches will be streamed live and available for free at JagNationTV.com, and live stats will be available through the multimedia section of USAJaguars.com.

South Alabama enters the final weekend of the regular season in second place in the SBC East Division standings. The Jaguars are 7-3 in their last 10 matches, and carry a 7-3 record at Jag Gym into Friday's matchup with CCU. The Chanticleers swept the Jags in straight sets earlier this season in Conway, S.C.

USA leads the SBC in blocks per set (2.64), and ranks second in the league in opponent hitting percentage (.160). The Jags are fourth in the conference in hitting percentage (.206) and service aces per set (1.25.).

Sophomore middle blocker Kelley Hartman leads the league in blocks per set (1.32), and ranks fourth in hitting percentage (.324). Senior defensive specialist Abby Baker, who was named the SBC Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, ranks sixth in the Sun Belt in digs per set (4.35).

In SBC matches, USA leads the league in blocks per set (2.76), ranks second in opponent hitting percentage (.152) and fourth in service aces per set (1.14) and hitting percentage (.227). Hartman leads the conference in hitting percentage (.375) in league matches, ranks second in blocks per set (1.19), fourth in service aces per set (0.28) and 10th in kills per set (2.89).

CCU (16-7, 13-1 SBC) carries a 10-game winning streak into Friday's match after defeating Georgia Southern and Georgia State last weekend. The Chanticleers are 7-5 in road matches this season, but are 7-0 in SBC road contests. CCU leads the conference in hitting percentage (.237), and ranks third in assists per set (12.37) and kills per set (13.13). CCU senior Leah Hardeman leads the SBC in kills per set (4.59), while Larissa Dos Santos ranks second in the league in hitting percentage (.327). In SBC matches, the Chanticleers lead the conference in service aces per set (1.31), rank second in hitting percentage (.249) and assists per set (12.70), and third in opponent hitting percentage (.158) and kills per set (13.50). Hardeman leads the conference with an average of 4.93 kills per set in league contests.

App State (11-17, 6-8 SBC) enters the weekend with a three-game winning streak, after defeating Georgia Southern and Georgia State in a pair of road matches last weekend. The Mountaineers enter Friday's contest at Troy with a 5-6 record on the road this season. App ranks third in the conference in digs per set (15.79), but is last in the league in service aces per set (0.92) and ranks 11th in opponent hitting percentage (.233) and blocks per set (1.62). App's Ashlyn Brown ranks second in the conference in assists per set (10.25), while Melissa McMath ranks seventh in the league in kills per set (2.89). 

USA defeated App State in five sets on Oct. 27 in Boone, N.C., but fell in straight sets at Coastal Carolina on Oct. 29. CCU holds a 3-1 all-time series lead over USA, and has won three straight contests in the series. The Jags' lone win over the Chanticleers came in five sets in 2000 at Myrtle Beach, S.C. USA holds a 4-3 all-time lead over App State in a series that began on Oct. 3, 2014. The Jags have won three straight in the series.
