MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama volleyball team will put its Sun Belt Conference unbeaten streak on the line this weekend when it travels to the state of Georgia for a pair of league contests.
USA (11-5, 6-0 SBC) will square off with Georgia Southern Fri., Oct. 13, at 5:30 p.m. (CT) at Hanner Fieldhouse in Statesboro, Ga. The Jags will then face Georgia State on Sat., Oct. 14, at 5 p.m. (CT) at GSU Sports Arena in Atlanta. Friday's match at Georgia Southern will be broadcast live on ESPN3, while Saturday's match with GSU will also be streamed live. South Alabama swept Troy in a pair of matches last week, and owns the best overall winning percentage (.688) in the SBC. The Jaguars are 8-2 in their last 10 contests, and carry a three-game road winning streak into Friday's match with Georgia Southern.
USA leads the SBC in blocks per set (2.75), ranks second in opponent hitting percentage (.167) and fourth in hitting percentage (.209) and service aces per set (1.32). Kelley Hartman leads the league in blocks per set (1.39), and ranks second in hitting percentage (.338). Abby Baker ranks sixth in digs per set (4.32).
In SBC contests, South Alabama leads the league in hitting percentage (.265) and blocks per set (3.24), ranks third in opponent hitting percentage (.160) and fourth in kills per set (13.14). Hartman leads the conference in hitting percentage (.466) in SBC matches, ranks third in blocks per set (1.24), sixth in kills per set (3.43) and tied for ninth in service aces per set (0.29).
Georgia Southern (5-11, 2-4) will host Savannah State at 6 p.m. Tuesday before facing Troy in Statesboro on Thursday. The Eagles enter the weekend tied for third place in the SBC East Division standings, and are 3-7 in their last 10 contests. Georgia Southern dropped a pair of matches last weekend at Coastal Carolina and Appalachian State. USA swept the Eagles in straight sets on Sept. 30 in Mobile. The Eagles rank second in the league in blocks per set (2.76) in conference matches.
Georgia State (8-11, 2-4 SBC) split a pair of matches last weekend, defeating Appalachian State in five sets Friday in Boone, N.C., before falling at Coastal Carolina in five sets on Sunday. The Panthers enter the weekend tied for third place in the SBC East Division, and are 5-5 in their last 10 matches. USA defeated GSU in four sets on Sept. 29 in Mobile. The Panthers lead the SBC in service aces per set (1.55), and rank third in digs per set (16.59) in league-only matches.
