MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama volleyball team will compete in its first Sun Belt Conference road matches this weekend.
USA (9-6, 0-2 SBC) will travel to Statesboro, Ga., to square off with Georgia Southern (8-9, 1-1 SBC) at 5:30 p.m. (CT) Friday at Hanner Fieldhouse, followed by a 5 p.m. (CT) contest against Georgia State in Atlanta at the GSU Sports Arena on Saturday. The Jaguars enter the weekend on a three-game losing skid after dropping a pair of SBC matches against Texas-Arlington and Texas State last weekend in Mobile. USA is 0-3 in road contests this season, and is one of four schools in the SBC East Division – along with Troy, Georgia State and Appalachian State – in seek of its first conference win of the year. Georgia Southern split a pair of matches last weekend, falling in straight sets at Louisiana-Monroe to open conference play and earning a 3-2 win at Louisiana-Lafayette last Sunday. Georgia State also carries a three-game losing streak into the weekend after falling at ULL in straight sets last Friday, followed by a 3-1 loss at ULM on Sunday.
Georgia Southern holds a 5-1 all-time series lead over the Jaguars, while USA holds a 7-3 all-time lead over the Panthers. South Alabama defeated the Eagles 3-1 in their lone matchup last season, and split a pair of matches with Georgia State.
USA leads the SBC in hitting percentage (.240), and ranks third in the league in assists per set (11.90) and kills per set (12.67). Abby Baker ranks third in the conference in digs per set (4.45), and Iva Durdanovic is third in the league in service aces per set (0.33) and eighth in kills per set (2.81). Sarah Richardson ranks eighth in the SBC in hitting percentage (.337).
Georgia State leads the league in service aces per set (1.79), while Georgia Southern ranks second with 1.50 per set. The Panthers rank last in the conference in hitting percentage (.161), but are second in the league in digs per set (15.05).
