MOBILE, Ala. – Sophomore
Alina Zolotareva (Barnaul, Russia) earned third place in her draw for the University of South Alabama women's tennis team at the UNLV Classic Sunday.
Zolotareva bested Washington State's
Ege Tomey 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 to clinch third place.
"No doubt we took some licks this weekend, but overall we got slightly better every day," said USA head coach
Jaco Keyser.
In doubles, seniors
Laura Matuskova (Bratislava, Slovakia) and
Monica Mitta (Fairhope, Ala.) dropped
Laura Eales and
Maren Helgo of Long Beach State 8-6 in the consolation finals. In the other consolation finals, sophomores
Alexandria Stiteler (Bradenton, Fla.) and Zolotareva fell to Fresno State's
Olivia Noble and
Georgia Lawson 8-6.
In other singles action, Matuskova defeated
Estee Widdershoven of Long Beach State 6-1, 6-0. Northern Arizona's
Hanneke Lodweijks defeated Stiteler 7-6, 6-0, and Mitta fell to
Bara Michalkova of Washington State 6-1, 6-0.
"There's plenty of work ahead of us in order to eliminate some of the breakdowns when we run up against good competition, but that's why we play the preseason," Keyser said. "We need to rest up, get back on the practice courts and identify and correct all of the mistakes we made this weekend to keep building towards January."
The Jaguars return to action Friday when they travel to Birmingham, Ala. for the Samford Classic.
