JAGUAR WOMEN’S TENNIS BLANKS NICHOLLS STATE

Results

MOBILE Ala.
– Coming off a win over Texas State on Friday, the University of South Alabama women's tennis team swept Nicholls State 7-0 at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts on Sunday.

"We did great a job today. Nicholls State is a tough, scrappy team and they competed at a very high level," USA head coach Jaco Keyser said. "I thought we came out and competed with them. It's a good one in the long run, most definitely."

Freshman Alexander Stiteler (Bradenton, Fla.) paired up with senior Cinta Maria Papke (Flein, Germany) and defeated Clemence Krug and Isla Brock 6-3 in the No. 1 spot of doubles competition. At No. 2, junior Laura Valkova (Bratislava, Slovakia) and senior Michaela Meszarosova (Bratislava, Slovakia) won over Stephanie Barnett and Ambika Pande 6-3.

"I liked the way they stayed the course," Keyser commented. "It wasn't always the best tennis, but I think they are looking at the big picture. They are trying to get better every single day and focusing in on that."

Meszarosova claimed the Jaguars' first singles point with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Krug on the No. 1 court. Stiteler claimed a victory over Barnett with a score of 7-6, 6-0, while junior Monica Mitta (Fairhope, Ala.) edged Julia Melendez 7-6, 6-2 at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively, to clinch the match.

Playing all three sets in the No. 4 spot, Valkova won over Milou Pietersz 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, and freshman Alina Zolotareva (Barnaul, Russia) defeated Brock 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 5. In the No. 6 spot, junior Laura Matuskova (Bratislava, Slovakia) won over Laia Charles 6-0, 6-4.

South Alabama is now 5-3 for their spring season record, while Nicholls State is 2-4.

"The wins are huge and it makes practice a little bit easier, and hopefully it validates what we do in practice," Keyser said. "It's always easier to get on the practice courts next week with a few wins behind you."

The Jaguars are back in action against Louisiana-Lafayette on Feb. 13 at 11 a.m.
