TROY, Ala. – The University of South Alabama volleyball team fell to Troy in four sets (25-22, 19-25, 25-27, 20-25) Tuesday at Trojan Arena.
Troy (7-20, 1-9 SBC) snapped a 16-game losing skid with the win, and evened its season series with South Alabama at one game apiece after the Jaguars swept the Trojans earlier this season.
Mechell Daniel recorded her second double-double in as many games, finishing with a game-high 14 kills along with 14 digs, one assist and three block-assists to lead USA. Nikki Gittens finished with nine kills and a season-high seven block-assists. Kristina Alabstro added eight kills and two block-assists. Parker Harrell recorded a season-high 18 assists along with one kill and four digs, while Ashlyn Roberts added 12 assists, four digs and one service ace.
USA (13-10, 4-6 SBC) opened the match with a 25-22 win in set one. The Jaguars broke a 16-16 tie midway through the set with four straight points, highlighted by a kill from Kelley Hartman, to take a 20-16 lead. A kill by Alabastro later in the set gave the Jags set point at 24-21. Following a kill by Troy's Reina Terry, Gittens clinched the set with a kill.
Troy took set two 25-19 to even the match at one set apiece. The Trojans then took a 2-1 lead in the match with a 27-25 set-three win. USA overcame a four-point deficit midway through the set, and eventually tied the score 23-23 on a Trojan attack error. Troy eventually won the set 27-25 on consecutive attack errors by Gittens, and clinched the match with a 25-20 win in set four.
Belle Waldrop and Sara Landis led Troy with 11 kills apiece, while Leah Causey added 10 kills, six digs, three blocks solo and four block-assists.
South Alabama will return to action this weekend when it closes out its home schedule. The Jaguars will host Coastal Carolina at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Jag Gym, and will host Appalachian State at 12:30 p.m. Sunday on Senior Day.
