ATLANTA – The University of South Alabama volleyball team fell to Georgia State in four sets (26-24, 23-25, 12-25, 20-25) in Sun Belt Conference action Saturday at GSU Sports Arena.
Three different Panthers recorded double-figure kill totals, led by Crystal Lee's 13. Eliza Zachary and Kristina Stinson added 12 kills apiece.
Iva Durdanovic recorded a team-high 13 kills and .417 hitting percentage to lead South Alabama (9-8, 0-4 SBC). Kelley Hartman finished with eight kills and two block assists, while Sarah Richardson added five kills and five total blocks. Mechell Daniel and Abby Baker recorded 15 digs apiece.
USA won the opening set 26-24 after overcoming a three-point deficit late in the set. GSU scored three straight points to take a 23-20 lead, but the Jaguars answered with three consecutive points, highlighted by a pair of kills from Iva Durdanovic, to tie the score 23-23. Another kill by Durdanovic on a Panther set point tied the score 24-24 before a kill by Sarah Richardson and a GSU attack error clinched the set for the Jaguars.
The Panthers evened the match 1-1 with a 25-23 win in set two. USA broke a 5-5 tie early in the set with five straight points, highlighted by kills from Kelley Hartman, Sarah Richardson and Durdanovic, to build a 10-5 advantage. USA extended its lead to six points, 15-9, midway through the set after scoring three straight points on a pair of Panther errors and a service ace by Richardson. GSU rallied for five consecutive points to cut the Jaguar advantage to 15-14.
Georgia State took set four 25-12, and clinched the match with a 25-20 win in set four.
South Alabama will return to action when it hosts Troy Sat., Oct. 8, at 4 p.m. in an SBC match at Jag Gym.
