STAALBO JOINS USA MEN’S GOLF PROGRAM FOR SPRING SEMESTER

MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama men's golf team will have an additional lineup option in the spring with the announcement Tuesday that Peter Staalbo has enrolled in school and will be eligible to compete immediately.

Staalbo, a Lejre, Denmark, resident, will have two more seasons of eligibility following the conclusion of the 2015-16 campaign.  He is currently ranked among the top 350 individuals overall and top 10 nationally in the current world amateur golf rankings.

"Peter is a very accomplished international player who has had consistent success over the last year-and-a-half in top amateur events," Jaguar head coach Ben Hannan commented.  "He is a good ball striker, a good iron player and mentally he loves to compete.  There might be a small transition as he learns the college game and plays on Bermuda grass, but Peter is a very talented player who has a chance to excel at this level."

During the 2015 season, Staalbo recorded eight top-20 performances and shot par or better on 15 occasions while participating in 11 events.  He earned a pair of victories, claiming the Hillerod Pokalen by a five-stroke margin with a 5-under-par 205 total following rounds of 69, 68 and 68 as well as the Danaeg PGA Championship, where he carded a 67 over the second 18 holes.  Staalbo posted a 6-under-par 282 — shooting a 70 in three of four rounds — at the Belgian International Amateur & National Stroke Play Championship to tie for second place, finishing among the top 10 at three other tournaments as well.  He also earned a 5 and 3 victory in the first round of the DM Hulspil while firing a 4-under-par 68 in the second round of the Willis Masters.

Staalbo also won a pair of events during the 2014 campaign, claiming the Wiibrow Cup with a 4-under-par 209 — shooting par or better in all three rounds — and the DGU Challenger Tour event in Dragør; at the latter tournament, he carded a pair of 68s.  He had two other top-20 results, with a low 18-hole score of 71 on both occasions, and advanced to the second round of the DM Hulspil as well that year.

The Jags' spring season will get underway on Monday, Feb. 22, when USA plays host to the Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate.  The program's annual home tournament will feature 54 holes over two days at the Magnolia Grove Crossings Golf Course.
