STATESBORO, Ga. – After taking the doubles point and all six singles matches in straight sets, the University of South Alabama women's tennis team dropped Sun Belt Conference foe Georgia Southern 7-0 on Friday.
The Jaguars improved to 16-0 in their spring campaign, while the Eagles dropped to 10-5 overall.
"This was a good win against a scrappy Georgia Southern team that is having a good year," said USA head coach
Jaco Keyser. "I like the way we executed the fundamentals in doubles and the way we stayed organized with our positioning."
South Alabama dropped only four games in doubles. Senior
Emily Newton (Dothan, Ala.) and sophomore
Laura Valkova (Piestany, Slovakia) downed
Mary Phillips Smith and
Anne Kurzwell 8-1 at the No. 1 spot. Sophomore
Monica Mitta (Fairhope, Ala.) and junior
Paula Sanchez (Bogota, Columbia) clinched the point for USA with an 8-3 win over
Jordana Klein and
Giulia Riepe at No. 3.
In singles action, senior
Mary Angela Martin (Mobile, Ala.) gave the Jags a 2-0 lead when she blanked
Lauren Mueller 6-0, 6-0 on the No. 6 court, and Valkova followed with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Klein in the No. 1 flight.
Sophomore
Laura Matuskova (Bratislava, Slovakia) secured the match for South Alabama after she topped
Francisca Norregaard 6-4, 6-1 at No. 5.
Mitta won 6-2, 6-3 over Smith at the No. 2 position, Newton defeated Riepe 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 3 flight and junior
Cinta Maria Papke (Flein, Germany) rounded out the day for USA with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over
Daria Vasekina at No. 4.
"I'm excited with how we are progressing as we enter our home stretch," said Keyser.
The Jaguars are back in action Tuesday, April 7 for Senior Day at home against Jackson State.
