ATLANTA – Behind five straight-sets wins in singles, the University of South Alabama women's tennis team swept Appalachian State 7-0 Thursday afternoon at the Dekalb Tennis Center.
The Jaguars extend their season-opening win streak to 15 and drop the Mountaineers to 8-13.
"I thought we played some really good tennis today," USA head coach
Jaco Keyser said. "It is very exciting to see when our execution and ball striking catches up with our competitiveness.
"I'm looking forward to get back out there tomorrow and build off today's good quality play."
USA took a 1-0 lead after losing just three games in doubles, and senior
Emily Newton (Dothan, Ala.) made it 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-0 win over
Brianna Armellino on the No. 4 courts.
Sophomores
Laura Matuskova (Bratislava, Slovakia) and
Monica Mitta (Fairhope, Ala.) earned victories at Nos. 6 and 1, respectively, to clinch the match. Matuskova defeated
McKayla Zupan 6-1, 6-1 to improve to 14-0 this spring, and Mitta topped
Clare Cox 6-2, 6-2.
Senior
Mary Angela Martin (Mobile, Ala.) ran her singles win streak to 10 with a 6-2, 6-0 victory on the No. 5 court vs.
Melissa Machado, and junior
Michaela Meszarosova (Bratislava, Slovakia) downed Mackenzie LaSure 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3.
The final USA point came from sophomore
Laura Valkova (Piestany, Slovakia) at No. 2 in a 6-7, 6-1, (10-1) win over
Gabrielle Wreder.
South Alabama went up 1-0 behind quick victories at Nos. 2 and 3. Martin and Meszarosova won 8-1 against
Megan Mullen and Machado, and junior
Paula Sanchez (Bogota, Colombia) and Mitta teamed up to defeat Zupan and Wreder 8-2.
The Jaguars face Georgia Southern Friday at 10 a.m.
