MOBILE, Ala. – University of South Alabama senior Emily Newton (Dothan, Ala.) and sophomore Monica Mitta (Fairhope, Ala.) each earned singles and doubles wins to lead the Jags in a 5-2 victory over Samford at the Bruce David Lubel Tennis Courts on Saturday.

USA improved to 8-0 for the second year in a row and the third time under head coach Jaco Keyser. The Bulldogs dropped to 5-6 overall.

"We competed once again at a very high level," said Keyser. "Samford is a good team. They take you out of your comfort zone, but overall I love the way we competed."

Newton clinched the match for the Jaguars in her eighth singles win for the season with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-0 victory over Yasmeen Ebada on the No. 2 court. She paired up with sophomore Laura Valkova (Piestany, Slovakia) to defeat Stephanie N'Tcha and Carita Moolman 8-4 at No. 1.

Mitta teamed up with junior Paula Sanchez (Bogota, Colombia) to secure the doubles point when they downed Iva Parapunova and Savannah Wood 8-5 at the No. 3 spot. She recorded her second point on the day with a 6-2, 1-6, 6-1 win at No. 3 over Jessica Northcutt.

Sophomore Laura Matuskova (Bratislava, Slovakia) gave the Jaguars a 2-0 lead with a quick 6-1, 6-2 victory over Parapunova at the No. 5 position. After the Bulldogs claimed their first point, senior Mary Angela Martin (Mobile, Ala.) put the Jags up 3-1 with her seventh singles win of the season, defeating Wood 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6. Newton then clinched the match for USA.

The Bulldogs recorded their two points with wins on the Nos. 1 and 4 courts.  N'Tcha outlasted Valkova 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 and Moolman closed the day with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over junior Michaela Meszarosova (Bratislava, Slovakia).

"We didn't give away any points," Keyser said. "For us to be successful, that is the recipe we have to follow."

The Jaguars return to action Thursday when they head to Jacksonville, Fla. and take on George Washington.
