MOBILE, Ala. - The University of South Alabama women's tennis team swept singles and doubles play in a 7-0 victory over Southern Mississippi Friday at the Bruce David Lubel Tennis Courts.
The Jaguars advanced to 7-0 while the Eagles dropped to 7-4.
"It was a good day," Jaguar head coach
Jaco Keyser said. "We really played some good doubles, and I think that set the tone."
Sophomore
Laura Valkova (Piestany, Slovakia) paired with senior
Emily Newton (Dothan, Ala.) to claim the No. 1 spot defeating
Carolin Drescher and
Alex Kitchen 8-3. Junior
Paula Sanchez (Bogota, Columbia) and sophomore
Monica Mitta (Fairhope, Ala.) secured the doubles point with an 8-4 victory over
Elena Roca and
Kathrin Waidner on the No. 3 court.
Michaela Meszarosova (Bratislava, Slovakia) and senior
Mary Angela Martin (Mobile, Ala.) also captured an 8-2 win at No. 2 over
Lisa Schneider and
Claudia Castella.
The Jaguars quickly claimed three singles matches in straight sets to earn the win. Newton downed
Karina Gurgenyan 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 3 spot, and Valkova defeated Drescher 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4. Mitta clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Schneider at the No. 2 position.
In other singles play, junior
Michaela Meszarosova (Bratislava, Slovakia) downed Castella 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4. Martin won 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 at the No. 5 spot, and sophomore
Laura Matuskova (Bratislava, Slovakia) closed the day with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 victory over Roca on the No. 6 court.
"We've got a little bit of confidence going," Keyser said. "The key for us is we are practicing at a really good level at the moment, and some of it is carrying over into matches."
The Jaguars return to action when they host Samford Saturday at 11 a.m.
