LAFAYETTE, La.
– The University of South Alabama women's tennis team shut out Louisiana-Lafayette in a 7-0 victory Saturday at the Cajun Courts.

The Jaguars advanced their school-record start to 14-0, while the Ragin' Cajuns fell to 3-13 overall.

"We did a good job absorbing some good play by Louisiana-Lafayette because they played a good match," USA head coach Jaco Keyser said. "I liked the way we stayed composed and had our fitness and competitiveness take over for us late."

After sophomore Laura Valkova (Piestany, Slovakia) and senior Emily Newton (Dothan, Ala.) downed Nelo Phiri and Elena Sava 8-2 on court No. 1, junior Paula Sanchez (Bogota, Colombia) and sophomore Monica Mitta (Fairhope, Ala.) defeated Kelly Drew and Lauren Dupuis 8-4 at No. 3 to clinch the doubles point.

Three Jags won their singles matches in straight sets. Sophomore Laura Matuskova (Bratislava, Slovakia) won 6-1, 6-1 over Dupuis at the No. 6 spot, followed by a 6-2, 6-3 victory by Valkova over Phiri on the No. 1 court. Junior Cinta Maria Papke (Flein, Germany) secured the win for USA downing Abby Johnson 7-5, 6-4 at No. 5.

Newton, senior Mary Angela Martin (Mobile, Ala.) and Mitta needed three sets in each of their victories. At the No. 3 spot, Newton fell 7-6 in the first set, but rallied back for a 6-7, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Sava.

Martin also battled back after losing her first set to claim a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over Alexandra Way at the No. 4 flight. Mitta rounded out the day for the Jags, downing Drew 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 on the No. 2 court.

"We definitely need to get back on practice courts and smooth things out before our next big Sun Belt weekend."

The Jaguars will return to action Thursday when they take on Appalachian State in Atlanta, Ga.
