RUSTON, La. – The University of South Alabama women's tennis team won five singles matches in straight sets to defeat Louisiana Tech 6-1 Friday afternoon at the LA Tech Tennis Complex.
The Jaguars extend their season-opening win streak to a school-record 13. The Bulldogs have their three-match win streak snapped and fall to 5-8.
"That was a good road win in some tough windy conditions," USA head coach
Jaco Keyser said. "I thought we competed at a very high level even though the conditions made the ball striking hard."
The Jags dropped just five games total on courts 1 and 3 to clinch the doubles point. Junior
Paula Sanchez (Bogota, Colombia) and sophomore
Monica Mitta (Fairhope, Ala.) won 8-2 at No. 3 over
Jazmin Britos and
Taylor Capannolo, and senior
Emily Newton (Dothan, Ala.) and sophomore
Laura Valkova (Piestany, Slovakia) downed
Tarrannum Handa and
Marta Sramkova 8-3 at No. 1.
In singles, junior
Michaela Meszarosova (Bratislava, Slovakia) defeated Handa 6-3, 6-0 on the No. 4 court to put South Alabama up 2-0, and Mitta added to the lead at No. 2 with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Britos.
Sophomore
Laura Matuskova (Bratislava, Slovakia) won 6-0, 6-4 against
Taly Merker at No. 5 to finish off the match and give the Jags their 13th victory of the season.
Following Matuskova's clincher, Valkova downed
Alexandra Starcova 6-3, 6-3 on the No. 1 court, and senior
Mary Angela Martin (Mobile, Ala.) won 6-1, 6-3 over Capannolo at No. 6.
