RUSTON, La.
– The University of South Alabama women's tennis team won five singles matches in straight sets to defeat Louisiana Tech 6-1 Friday afternoon at the LA Tech Tennis Complex.

The Jaguars extend their season-opening win streak to a school-record 13. The Bulldogs have their three-match win streak snapped and fall to 5-8.

"That was a good road win in some tough windy conditions," USA head coach Jaco Keyser said. "I thought we competed at a very high level even though the conditions made the ball striking hard."

The Jags dropped just five games total on courts 1 and 3 to clinch the doubles point. Junior Paula Sanchez (Bogota, Colombia) and sophomore Monica Mitta (Fairhope, Ala.) won 8-2 at No. 3 over Jazmin Britos and Taylor Capannolo, and senior Emily Newton (Dothan, Ala.) and sophomore Laura Valkova (Piestany, Slovakia) downed Tarrannum Handa and Marta Sramkova 8-3 at No. 1.

In singles, junior Michaela Meszarosova (Bratislava, Slovakia) defeated Handa 6-3, 6-0 on the No. 4 court to put South Alabama up 2-0, and Mitta added to the lead at No. 2 with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Britos.

Sophomore Laura Matuskova (Bratislava, Slovakia) won 6-0, 6-4 against Taly Merker at No. 5 to finish off the match and give the Jags their 13th victory of the season.

Following Matuskova's clincher, Valkova downed Alexandra Starcova 6-3, 6-3 on the No. 1 court, and senior Mary Angela Martin (Mobile, Ala.) won 6-1, 6-3 over Capannolo at No. 6.
