SAN MARCOS, Texas
– The University of South Alabama women's tennis team swept doubles and took four singles matches in straight sets to defeat Sun Belt foe Texas State on Sunday at the Bobcat Tennis Complex.

After posting a 3-0 record on the weekend, the Jaguars improved to 4-0 in their spring campaign. The Bobcats dropped to 1-2 overall.

"We had a very good performance today in picking up a solid road win," said USA head Jaco Keyser. "It's always tough playing indoors, but we handled the situation very professionally. After a slugglish start in doubles, I thought we came out in singles and put together some of our best periods of play so far this season."

After USA took the doubles point, South Alabama started singles with a 2-0 lead after a walkover at No. 6. Senior Mary Angela Martin (Mobile, Ala.) downed Eva Dench 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 4 flight to put the Jags up 3-0.

Sophomore Laura Matuskova (Bratislava, Slovakia) secured the win for USA with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Shannon Beckett on the No. 5 court.

Senior Emily Newton (Dothan, Ala.) topped Ana Laura Gutierrez 7-5, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot and sophomore Monica Mitta (Fairhope, Ala.) finished out the day with a 7-6 (10-8), 6-1 win over Pippa Carr at No. 3.

In doubles action, South Alabama took the point with a pair of 8-6 victories at the Nos. 1 and 2 positions. Newton and junior Michaela Meszarosova (Bratislava, Slovakia) defeated Beckett and Monica Pieratt at No. 2, and sophomore Laura Valkova (Piestany, Slovakia) and Mitta topped Gutierrez and Carr.

"I definitely think we made progress this weekend," said Keyser. "We are looking forward to getting back home and on the practice court to continue getting better."
