NO. 2 FLORIDA STATE PULLS AWAY FROM SOUTH ALABAMA SOCCER EARLY, WINS 5-0

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – University of South Alabama soccer gave up five first half goals to No. 2 Florida State, including four in the first 11 minutes, as the Seminoles dispatched the Jaguars, 5-0, in the second round of the 2015 NCAA Women's Soccer Championship in Tallahassee on Friday.

FSU (17-2-4) freshman midfielder Megan Connolly converted a penalty kick in the second minute of regulation to key the 'Nole outburst. Senior forward Cheyna Williams slotted home less than three minutes later, and classmate Isabella Schmid struck twice in the eighth and 11th minutes to make it 4-0.

Seminole midfielder Michaela Hahn found the back of the net from 20 yards out in the 36th minute after freshman Elin Jensen reached the endline and ushered a pass across the Jaguar penalty area.

Florida State outshot USA, 25-3, on the night, placing 11 shots on frame. FSU also won the corner kick battle, 11-2.

USA (18-3-2) goalkeeper Sarah Hay recorded six saves on the night. Jaguar forward Charde Hannah mustered the visitors' best chance of the night in the 73rd minute, the sophomore running onto a high through ball, but FSU substitute goalkeeper Caroline Brockmeier came up with a save just four minutes after entering the contest in relief of starter Cassie Miller.

"First off, congratulations to Florida State," said USA head coach Graham Winkworth. "[They are an] extremely well-coached and talented team, and they showed us again why I think they will go to win the national championship again with some excellent soccer. Obviously, we're disappointed not to be going in the next round. We're more disappointed, I think, that we didn't show what we're capable of showing in the first half. That's probably the thing we're most disappointed with, because we started a little bit scared, and that wasn't really what we showed last week in the first round.

"I talked to [our team] at halftime about forget the score," Winkworth added. "Are we likely to score six goals on Florida State in the second half? No. But let's try and grab ourselves one. We came close a couple times, but we also defended with a little bit more pride. I was so proud of the season that we had. I just didn't feel like we showed that sort of work ethic. I was a little disappointed after the first half with our effort levels. In the second half, the mentality was so much better and I was more proud of the way we defended than anything. The girls can hold their heads high from that second half."

South Alabama made its first appearance in the second round of the national tournament after defeating LSU, 4-0, at home in the first round. The Jaguars claimed the 2015 Sun Belt Conference Tournament title for the third year in a row, finishing as regular-season champions for a second-straight year.
